Some quotes from Katherine about her performance in Shanghai: Reutter leads Team USA with gold in Shanghai By US Speed Skating / December 11, 2011 www.universalsports.com/news-blogs/article/newsid=570962.html"I performed even better than I had anticipated today, which is a nice surprise going into a competition where I felt I would be happy just as long as I could improve from last week," said Reutter. "Not only did I improve, but I exceeded my expectations and brought home a gold, which feels really good given my last several months of injury. Hopefully I can continue this trend for the rest of the season." "All of the ladies today were very happy to make our first A Final of the season, and not only that, but to get a silver medal," added Reutter. "It was a very close and strong race. Unfortunately, China had a little bit more left in the tank with the last three laps than we did, but we performed to the best of our ability and we are extremely proud of our performance and our results." This is a painful article for me to post - heal fast, heal well, Katherine! Speedskating: Katherine Reutter poised for end to reign as national short-track championBy Michael C. Lewis / Salt Lake City Tribune / Jan 7, 2012 Kearns • Katherine Reutter’s long reign as national short-track speedskating champion appears to be coming to an end, while Lana Gehring’s could be just getting started. A two-time Olympic medalist and reigning world champion, Reutter crashed in the final of the women’s 1,500 meters on the second day of the U.S. Short-Track Championships on Saturday at the Utah Olympic Oval, and failed to reach the final of the 500 — virtually assuring that she will not win a fifth straight overall national title. "It was a rough day," she said. Not for Gehring, though. The 21-year-old, who won a bronze medal with Reutter in the team relay at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, won both races contested Saturday, to all but clinch her first title. She has won three of the four races so far — her only loss came in the 444-meter time trial, by 0.02 seconds — and looks poised to continue her dominance on the final day of competition Sunday. "You never know how you’re going to do," she said. "I just try my hardest." Gehring leads the overall standings with 2,900 points; simply reaching the final in either of the final two races — the 1,000 and 3,000 meters — will clinch the title. Aly Dudek sits in second place with 1,965 points, with Emily Scott third with 1,952. Reutter has 1,271 for fifth. On the men’s side, Simon Cho continued to lead with 2,700 points after winning the 500 meters and finishing second in the 1,500. Travis Jayner is behind him with 1,865 points, with Jordan Malone third with 1,640. John-Henry Krueger might have been higher than fourth if he hadn’t crashed in the final of the 500, after winning the 1,500 in an impossibly tight finish. He, Cho and Jayner all finished within 0.056 seconds of each other. The top four overall finishers will clinch places at the last two World Cup races of the season, with the top three earning spots at the season-ending World Championships in Shanghai. Coaches will add two discretionary picks to each team, which might be how Reutter makes it, if she cannot improve her standing on Sunday. She has been battling a lingering back injury, but said it wasn’t pain that has bothered her here so much as the inevitable result of not being able to train as hard as necessary. "I’ve been trying to convince myself that I can overcome what my body is going through," she said. "Now it’s becoming painfully obvious that I’m not in as much control as I thought." If Reutter does not finish in the top three, she would not be allowed to race in any of the individual races at the World Championships — only the relay. As a reigning world champion at 1,500 meters, she would be able to force a race-off for one of the individual spots later against the third-place finisher if she is forced to pull out of the competition. But "I wouldn’t do that to these girls," she said. Reutter did leave open the possibility of sitting out the rest of the season if she does not qualify automatically for spots on the team, considering that "everybody" is telling her that she needs to rest to fully recover from her injury.[/img] Read More: m.sltrib.com/sltrib/mobile/53252419-77/reutter-meters-1500-final.html.csp+++ Tags: Lana Gehring / Emily Scott / Katherine Reutter / Travis Jayner / Jordan Malone / Simon Cho / John-Henry Krueger / Alyson Dudek / Short Track Speedskating

First, the GOOD news: USA Swimming Women's Relay Team, Speedskater Katherine Reutter, Biathlete Lowell Bailey Recognized as U.S. Olympic Committee December Athletes of MonthUSOC / January 12, 2012 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After displaying superior athletic performances in December, speedskater Katherine Reutter (Champaign, Ill.) and biathlete Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) earned Athlete of the Month honors while USA Swimming women's 400m medley relay team collected the Team of the Month award, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced today. Continuing a strong start to the 2011-12 ISU Short Track World Cup season, Reutter added four medals to bring her season total to six. At World Cup 3 held Dec. 2-4 in Nagoya, Japan, Reutter won a bronze medal in the 1000m (1:32.945). The following weekend at World Cup 4 in Shanghai, China, she captured a gold medal in the 1000m (1:32.721), silver in the 1500m (2:22.764) and silver medal as a member of the 3000m relay (4:13.000). ...and now the BAD news: (Thanks to Daisymomma for posting this article on the USC Chat thread earlier this week) Katherine Reutter to have hip surgeryAssociated Press / January 8, 2012 KEARNS, Utah -- Two-time Olympic medalist and defending 1,500 world champion Katherine Reutter will have surgery on both hips as soon as possible and miss the rest of the season. "I feel like I've hit a point where if I don't try anything new, all I'm doing is accepting mediocrity, and that's not OK," Reutter said Sunday after finishing fifth overall at the U.S. Short Track National Championships at the Utah Olympic Oval. She was the four-time defending national champion but both hips are impinged and one has a torn labrum. Those issues are causing back problems and making it difficult to train and compete. A comment by a former Olympian this weekend opened her eyes. "A former teammate came up to me and said very plainly, 'I know what pain looks like and you need to ask yourself (if) what you're doing to your body is worth it,' " Reutter said. She talked with her parents, sports psychologist, trainer and coach and they all agreed that she had done all she could trying to push through the injury. "I really had myself convinced if I tried harder, if I was tougher or did something better that I could beat it," Reutter said. She finally realized more surgery was the answer, though not a guarantee that she will make a full recovery for next season and the 2014 Games. Reutter's gold in the 1,500 in March made her the first U.S. woman since Bonnie Blair in 1986 to win a world title. She has won six World Cup medals this season so far -- three gold, two silver and a bronze -- heading into nationals. But pain in her back caused by the hip problems hurt her ability to train. She finished second in Sunday's 1,000-meter race and third in Friday's first time trial, but failed to medal in four other races including her specialty. Reutter already had a torn labrum repaired in her right hip, but needs that done in her left hip. She said she also will need to have bone shaved down in both hips. Dr. Stephen Aoki at the University of Utah will perform the procedures. Reutter said Aoki performed similar surgeries on Chad Hedrick the year he won a pair of Olympic medals. Reutter expects to spend four weeks on crutches after each procedure. She will work on her associate's degree and become a certified personal trainer during the rehab. "I'm going to do my rehab to the T, be very patient and be sure that when I come back, I have no excuses holding me back for 2014," Reutter said. She was back competing 16 weeks after having the first labral tear repaired, but acknowledged rushing her recovery. Six months later, she began experiencing back pain that hasn't gone away. She thought a 3 millimeter heel lift in one shoe was helping, but this weekend's results proved she was far from healthy. "I'm not OK with performing at the level that I'm at, and if it takes drastic measures to get back on top then I'm going to take them," she said. "And either I'll get back on top or if I don't get back, then I'm going to know that I didn't settle and did everything in my power to be the best that I can possibly be. It's not just in speed skating, but in life. I see no sense in stopping when there's more to be gained."[/img] Read More: espn.go.com/olympics/speedskating/story/_/id/7439668/olympic-short-track-speedskater-katherine-reutter-opts-double-hip-surgeryTags: Katherine Reutter / Short Track Speedskating

...and another article
By Sandra Johnson, Jan 19, 7:12 pm EST
What would you do if you were not afraid?
That's the question speed skater Katherine Reutter poses in her guest post on DailyHouse.com. Earlier this month, Reutter, a two-time Olympian, was forced to abandon the rest of her season and face her own greatest fear: Surgery.
"My biggest fear is overcoming the mental strain of rehabbing from this and one more surgery on my right hip set to be in March, and then making it back to the top of the world where I belong," Reutter wrote in her post on DailyHouse.com.
Reutter has been dealing with intense pain that has made it difficult to train, she wrote. Both of her hips are impinged, her left labrum is torn, and she has already had surgery to repair her right labrum. The injuries have cause back problems for Reutter, making it difficult for her to compete. Read more about Reutter's injuries.
As a female, a coach, and a former athlete, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Reutter. It's difficult to get up and train through pain each day. During this season, she's shown a special type of determination and perseverance. She's proven herself to be a fighter, and I can't help but respect that about her.
But I also have to respect the fact that she has been able to recognize that she has to step back and make the best choices for herself and her career—if she wants to continue to compete in the future.
That has got to be an incredibly difficult decision to make, especially since Reutter is the defending world champion in the 1,500-meter. At 23, Reutter also is relatively young, and that's a big decision for a young woman to make.
"I can say with complete confidence that I have given every last piece of myself physically, mentally, and emotionally to overcome this injury and finally, just last week, I realized that the fight was over," Reutter wrote on DailyHouse.com. "…As hard as it is to admit that I've reached the end of what I can control, it's time to open up to the idea that this isn't a problem I can fix with persistence and determination, but a legitimate medical issue that needs to be addressed."
Sometimes I think it's easier for determined athletes to put their heads down and keep fighting through pain and adversity, because that's what they've been trained to do their entire lives. It's easy to ignore the problem and hope that with a little more work or a little more time, the issue will resolve itself. It's much more difficult to admit defeat.
So while I loved the fight from Reutter, I also love her ability to recognize a problem and take proper actions to fix it, even if it means facing her fears in the process.

Good one, gasp! Katherine's FB page reports that she's doing well post-op! I reported upthread that Katherine did a guest blog about her surgery for Dailyhouse.com - she's also doing a blog for ESPN.com, and will be updating both periodically. Here are the links to both: espn.go.com/espnw/athletes-life/7479621/speedskater-katherine-reutter-set-surgerydailyhouse.com/2012/01/19/time-for-a-change-guest-blog-by-katherine-reutter/If you need something to do today - last Saturday Katherine had the honor of singing the National Anthem at the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship in St. Paul. The event will air *today* - Saturday, January 21st on NBC at 2pm ET/1pm CT/12pm MT/11am PT. If I'm not mistaken, this is the event that short track skater Brittany Salmon competed in - so maybe we'll see BOTH Katherine and Brittany!

Katherine competed at US Championships in SLC (Jan 6-8, 2012) - she finished 5th overall, and may very well have been selected to skate at the World Cups - but instead, as you know, Katherine elected to sit out the rest of the 2011-2012 season to have double hip surgery. Here are her results: 5th Overall 9-Lap Time Trial – 3rd 4-Lap Time Trial - 6th 1500M – 5th (A Final) 500M – 1st (B Final) 1000M – 2nd (A Final) 3000M – 4th (A Final) 1000M Podium - L to R: Katherine Reutter (2nd); Lana Gehring (1st); Alyson Dudek (3rd).
