The following Hero Card was provided by US Speedskating: Katherine is our newest National Champion (her third)! She won the 9-lap time trial, the 1500M and the 1000M at the recent Olympic Trials in Marquette, MI, and will be competing in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics!

This via email updates I receive on Katherine. I know the pics did not transfer but I'm pretty sure this crowd does not need a picture to be able to identify our National Champs and the Olympic Teams. Katherine Reutter Fans - What a week! What a week! What a week! Shortly after midnight Saturday Katherine was named the women's 2010 National U.S. Short Track Champion - pulling off a 3-peater! And then she was nominated as #1 seed for the women's 2010 U.S. Short Track Olympic Team. Pictures of both awards are attached. For those of you who have never met Katherine - in the first picture she's the one in the middle - flashing the gold; in the 2nd picture she's in the middle again - standing next to Apolo Ohno, the men's National U.S. Short Track Champion for the 10th year in a row. From the left is Lana Gehring, Allison Baver, Kimberly Derrick, Allison Dudek, Katherine, Apolo, Jordan Malone, Travis Jayner, and Simon Cho. J.R. Celski also made the team, but unable to be in the picture due to being at the hospital after being injured earlier in the evening. J.R. has had surgery and is now back in Salt Lake; he will most likely miss all of the upcoming world cups, but is expected to have a full recovery and competing at the Olympics in February. And now we are back to playing "Where in the World is Katherine"! At 6:45am Sunday morning Katherine flew out of Marquette, MI to Salt Lake City, UT only to turn around and head out to Beijing, China at 8:30pm. Yep, she's now on the World Cup circuit..... World Cup I Beijing, China September 17 to 20, 2009 World Cup II Seoul, Korea September 24 to 27, 2009 World Cup III Montreal, Canada November 5 to 8, 2009 World Cup IV Marquette, MI November 12 to 15, 2009 Those of you interested in following her on the world cup circuit can do so at: www.sportresult.com/federations/ISU/ShortTrack/When racing starts there will be a LIVE link at the top - not as good as being there, but nearly as exciting. The schedule for World Cup I is posted at the website above; racing starts at 2:15pm Thursday - that's 1:15 *AM* Thursday for those of us in the Central time zone (13 hour time difference). Those of you in other time zones can figure out the time difference by using the World Clock at: www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/The format is different this circuit - 1) all distances are only being run *once*, instead of one distance being run twice. The following distances will be run: 500, 1000, 1500, and relay; Katherine will be skating the 1500, 1000, and women's relay. And 2) there is *no* repechage - if they don't advance they are out of the distance...they have to show what they are really made of this time around. So keep your fingers crossed and knock on wood.....GO KATHERINE! My personal footnote: Green is for GO GO GO Katherine

WOO-HOO! No rest for the weary, eh? What a week - and a nice glimpse into Katherine's world. The ISU schedule shows the start at 1:15pm Beijing time, rather than 2:15pm...

www.daily-journal.com/archives/dj/print_display.php?id=445163Rob Laird: Sure-bet Olympian has local ties09/14/2009, 10:19 am Comment on this story In the coming months, the spotlight is going to shine on young Katherine Reutter of Champaign. It won't shine brightly enough to blind her, however, said Cissna Park's Wendi Trask, an aunt of Reutter, who is set to become a darling of the United States' 2010 Winter Olympic team as its best short-track speed skater. "She's really a neat person," said Trask, whose brother, Jay, is Reutter's father. "She's very busy, but she thrives on it." Trask is just one of several relatives Reutter has in the area, including Dick Reutter, Trask's father, and Katherine Reutter's grandfather. One uncle, Terry, lives in Cissna Park with his wife, Sara, and another uncle, Rick, lives in Bourbonnais with his wife, Sal. Katherine also has several cousins living in the area. They've all followed every move of Katherine's career, which has blossomed since she began taking advanced classes in St. Louis less than 10 years ago. "She got started with what was kind of a 'mommy-daughter' figure skating club when she was really young," said Trask. "(Katherine) didn't want to do figure 8, so they let her join speed skating class, even though she was probably too little for it. They took it as far as they could in Champaign. "Eventually, they decided she needed a little more training, so they began driving down to St. Louis on Saturday mornings - sometimes Saturday and Sunday both." Soon enough, Reutter outgrew the St. Louis club and began training in Marquette, Mich. All that training paid off in spades over the weekend, when Reutter dominated the U.S. Olympic Trials, located at her old stomping grounds in Marquette. She won the 1,500-meter and 1,000-meter overall points standings while taking second in the 500-meter standings. Though the official U.S. Olympic speed skating team won't be announced until after the World Cup in November, Reutter's performance at the trials was so transcendent that it seems impossible she won't make the cut after "gliding to victory ... (and) bringing the crowd to its feet in excitement," USA Today's Jim LaJoie said. As impressive as that was, it was nothing compared to the trick she pulled in the quarterfinals, when she literally jumped over a downed opponent, then passed the lead pack to secure the win. "One of my goals was to be able to change strategy," Reutter told media after the trials. "That's one of my weaknesses. I wanted to be very flexible." Trask, who kept up with Reutter's performance through various social-networking Web sites, e-mail updates and other Internet sources, could scarcely contain her emotions as the weekend progressed. "It's extremely exciting and since it's a family member, it's quite nerve-racking," she said. Just 21 years old with a shock of red hair -- and hailing from the same town as legendary skater Bonnie Blair -- Reutter seems destined to win the hearts of American Olympic fans. Already, nearly every move Reutter makes both on and off the ice is being tracked by NBC, which is set to run a detailed profile for America's best chance at women's speed skating gold. Trask said Reutter remains grounded even as her fame begins to grow by the minute, citing Reutter's work with the Champaign Police Department, as well as with children who are learning to skate. Now living at the U.S. Olympic training facility in Salt Lake City, she also finds time to visit her relatives in Cissna Park. "Her travel itinerary makes sure she gets back to the area two or three times a year," Trask said. "She goes around to see all of her relatives. Family is very important to her. She's just a really special person." ~ Rob Laird can be reached at rlaird@daily-journal.com or 815-937-3390.

That was amazing to see. I don't know how she did it. Both skates off the ice. Got knocked back to last place, had to make up a quarter lap with two laps to go. Amazing.

...and the amazement continues. Congrats to Katherine on her Bronze in China SPEEDSKATING: Reutter and Simon win bronze at the World Cup by Peri Kinder - U. S. Speedskating () Beijing, China. September 19, 2009 It was a battle for the podium as the U.S. Short Track World Cup Team took the ice on the third day of competition at the ISU World Cup in Beijing, China. At the end of the day, bronze medals were awarded to Katherine Reutter (Champaign, IL) and Jeff Simon (Las Vegas, NV) for their solid performances. After fighting through the quarter-final and semi-final rounds in the Ladies 1500m, both Reutter and Kimberly Derrick (Memphis, TN) earned their way into the A Final. In a tough race, Reutter just couldn’t pass Yang Zhou of China who went on to win the event with a time of 2:28.6. Reutter ended on the podium with a bronze medal and Derrick finished sixth in the A Final. Allison Baver (Sinking Spring, PA) finished in first place in the B Final of the Ladies 1500m. The Men’s 1500m event saw Apolo Anton Ohno (Seattle, WA), Jordan Malone (Denton, TX) and Simon each advance to the semi-finals but all three finished third in their heats, just missing the A Final. Ohno went on to win the B Final in the 1500m with Malone in second and Simon in sixth after a fall. Team USA struggled in the 500m events with Alyson Dudek (Hales Corners, WI) finishing third in the quarter-finals and not advancing. Simon Cho (Laurel, MD) was disqualified in his quarter-final heat and although Anthony Lobello (Tallahassee, FL) skated well, he also did not advance. However, Jeff Simon skated aggressively in his quarter-final race, winning his heat and finishing second in the semi-finals which allowed him to move on to the 500m A Final. In a tough race, Jeff Simon held his own and finished with a bronze medal and a time of 41.665. The World Cup event wraps up on Sunday, September 20 with finals for the Men’s and Ladies 1000m and the Relay events.
