I'm creating this new thread so that we can have a place to chat about the upcoming Summer Olympics in London.

Are. You. KIDDING ME? Party poopers. There were some warnings about this at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, so I think we can expect more of the same in Sochi: The Games Shall Not Be Tweeted: London Laws Make Posting Pics From Inside Olympics CriminalFor athletes the rules are incredibly strict during Games time: Tweeting, posting to Facebook, or to any online content sharing service, pictures of yourself with any sponsor product that is not an Olympic sponsor could result in disqualification. Athletes cannot publish any sound or audio of any event, nor can they serve as ‘broadcasters’ which means that they are barred from talking about events or the goings on of events with other athletes.
For fans of the Olympics the rules are even stricter. Individuals are, according to strict reading of the law, barred from uploading any photos or videos from inside any venue. Presumably under the new Olympic law posting a picture of you and the fam’ inside a venue could be a criminal offense.Read More: dailyhouse.com/2012/04/26/the-games-shall-not-be-tweeted-london-laws-make-posting-pics-from-inside-olympics-criminal/

How cool is THIS - note that they're NOT talking about the Paralympic Games here. I wish him all the best, and I can't wait to see how he does! 'Blade runner' Pistorius handed dream double Olympic ticketThu July 5, 2012 (CNN) -- Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius will compete at the Olympic Games after he was named in both the individual 400m and the South Africa 4x400m relay squad for London 2012. I posted a similar article on FB, but yours is much better Gasp! It really drives the point home that the US of A does NOT support its athletes at all, and then everyone 'BBC's (b*tch, Bellyaches & Complains) when the USOC goes scrounging for non US sponsorship because US sponsors can't be bothered. Ralph Lauren is at least (as far as I know) a US company, even if he's making his clothing in China...just like every other clothing manufacturer. But I'll post my *snark* here as well as FB. And now, under the heading of 'Hypocrisy Much?' :1) Congress, - our gov't/congress/taxes don't support our athletes financially for the games or otherwise, so you abdicate all rights to snivel about their uniforms, foreign made or otherwise... 2) Congress! - You're the ones who not only gave their blessing, but in many instances orchestrated all those 'made in the USA' clothing labels AND jobs going overseas. 3) Congress!!! - It's called 'Capitalism'!-but now that it's our athletes clothed in its results for the games you cry foul at poor Ralph? (The clothes are STILL b*tt @ss ugly, but that's a separate issue...) Hey, it's a business. Ralph does it for PROFIT. You know, that stuff you say is the end all be all... 4) Congress!!!!! how many times have I heard that this sort of business as usual is 'The American Way'? 5) Congress - Me thinks thou dost protest too much... news.yahoo.com/lawmakers-want-made-china-u-olympic-uniforms-burned-174456466--abc-news-politics.html

Since Senator Harry Reid is the first Congressmen quoted, I hit his website and sent these comments:
Dear Senator: As a fan of the Olympics-winter and summer--where was your outrage over the Ralph Lauren team uniforms worn by the winter athletes in Vancouver? Your statement: “I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference on taxes.
..is just another example of how out of touch Congress is about many things including the Olympics. You do realize the Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah hosts many World Cup Long Track and Short Track events.
On my first trip to SLC, I was challenged on the best route to take to the Oval due to the "odd" numbering of the streets. I stopped at a local eatery and asked for directions. These were locals, who live in Kearns, and had no idea what I was talking about!
"The Kearns Oval from the 2002 Olympics--I have no idea." Sounds like Congress--"no idea" when it comes to the Olympics.
The Olympics are obscure athletic events. Summer games are more notable than the winter games, but overall nobody gives a tinker's d*mn about assisting with funding of the National Governing Boards of each discipline, much less funding MADE IN THE USA team uniforms.
As fans we set up our own fund raising site for some of the athletes. Right now, I just donated to the SoCal Speedskating Club to help defray the $60,000 annual ICE TIME fees these athletes pay for out-of-pocket so they can train. Maybe you and your cronies in D.C. on both sides of the aisle can dip into the pension I will be providing you and cough up that $60,000.00!
Your comments and your "outrage" are laughable, not to mention embarassing! And pointing a finger at USOC and telling them THEY should be ASHAMED--isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?

if you are so inclined contact Mr. Reid and or your representatives. I have. It will be a small wave in the ocean of funding that comes out of Washington. However, you never know when that one email, will tweek someone's interest or fall into the hands of some rebel medial type, and they roll with it!
I'll bet you dollars-to-donuts the next USA Winter Games uniforms will be made in the USA.
Maybe they need to do a Project Runway totally devoted to up-and-coming designers to give them a leg up in the industry by designing, winning and then overseeing the manufacture of the TEAM Uniforms in the USA. I have a sewing machine. Maybe I should dust if off and start my pre-olympic training for that "game."

And today under the heading of 'Hypocrisy Much?' Redux...There is also a very lively discussion on this subject on Tony's FB page. Levi Kirkpatrick just reminded me of this fact... ...Wait for it.... These same elected officials who are sniveling about the uniforms are the EXACT SAME PEOPLE who voted to CUT THE ATHLETES FUNDING for college!!!! The ONE THING this country was willing to do for its Olympic athletes and hopefuls. And now we don't even do that. I feel an 'expanded' letter to said elected officials coming on... EDIT: Upon further research, it was Obama who killed it, but Congress certainly didn't do anything much to save it.

I've copied this to Levi's thread as well. Levi Kirkpatrick invites the Boots and Blades community to contact him on Facebook. I believe he is on twitter too under the handle of 'fattykirk' (he's not, but ya still gotta laugh) The current discussion about members of congress complaining about the US Olympic uniforms along with their cutting of the Stupak Scholarships which funded some of their college education is a subject he is very passionate about. I hope he doesn't mind, but I'm just going to quote him directly, as he put it more eloquently than I could: "Please feel free to point the rocker fund community towards my fbook. I feel as though I have laid out some real issues as far as a perspective from an athlete with olympic aspirations who has been "in the system" even was able to take full advantage of the Stupak Scholarship and how great of a program it was, only to see it sadly be cut." If we along with the athletes contact our elected officials, perhaps not only can we get our point across about the uniforms, but the unfairness of the whole Olympic funding process (or complete lack thereof). Remember, it's an election year, it's the only time our elected officials even pretend to listen to us...

Regarding Congressmen whining about Olympic clothing while NOT whining about the axed Stupak scholarship program, or supporting our athletes in any way, shape or form. Oh. My. God. I especially loved this line: "Olympic athletes receive generous support from a variety of sources."Are they completely high??? That's some powerful sh*t they're smokin', and they really need to get off of it... And we're talking about a program that was a whopping 1 million bucks (heavy sarcasm intended). Compared to the rest of the garbage we spend money on, and lots of it, this program was p*ss in the ocean. And they know it. mediamatters.org/research/2010/02/03/fox-nations-claim-that-obama-cut-program-to-get/159987Obama budget cuts Stupak scholarship(although every president has tried to axe this. Obama just succeeded) voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2010/02/obama-budget-cuts-stupak-schol.html..."Stupak adds that with the Winter Olympics approaching, it is “time to remind Congress why it is important to provide educational assistance to aspiring young Olympic athletes. We’ll all be cheering our athletes next month, but we should remember that programs like this give a major boost to those training for the games. Shani Davis, the first black speed skater to make the U.S. Olympic team, credits the scholarship with keeping him in school. There are hundreds of stories like that. This program has become a small farm team for Olympic education.”www.nationalreview.com/corner/194172/stupak-disappointed-obamas-scholarship-cut/robert-costa...and last but not least: Ralph Lauren promises 2014 Olympic Opening Ceremony outfits will be American-madesports.yahoo.com/blogs/olympics-fourth-place-medal/ralph-lauren-promises-2014-olympic-opening-ceremony-outfits-234334614--oly.html...yeah, this is me being surprised...

Good for David.... Good for Saudi Arabia Good for women athletes in general and good for this made-in-America product: www.facebook.com/survivalstrapsOlympic support bracelets available. Check out their website too and read the stories about these survival strap bracelets! Great idea. I see stocking stuffers dancing in my head....

Note the paragraph in red. I find this particularly offensive... If you have a moment, check out the comments afterward. I found this one especially good. By Veritas: 'Shocking that the suits at the USOC are paid a king's ransom and the very athletes that are what this is all about get peanuts. Outrageous. And it is these dunderheaded USOC suits that approved an outrageous 20 year contract to Ralph Lauren AND approved the ridiculous uniform with turbans atop the athletes heads and obnoxious, gargantuan polo logos on the clothing, obscuring the very American icons that are supposed to be showcased on these outfits. Worst OLympics management team in recent memory.'Do medals mean money? A look at Olympic bonusesBy Maggie Hendricks | Fourth-Place Medal – Mon, Jul 16, 2012 6:00 PM EDT sports.yahoo.com/blogs/olympics-fourth-place-medal/medals-mean-money-look-olympic-bonuses-220012051--oly.htmlLast week, CNN took a look at how many American Olympians are struggling financially. Outside of the privileged few in marquee sports, becoming an Olympian is not a financial boon. Even winning a medal doesn't guarantee financial success. The United States Olympic Committee pays out medal bonuses: $25,000 goes to gold medal winners, $15,000 for silver medals and $10,000 for bronze. Those bonuses have not changed in a decade. With inflation, the bonuses have actually dropped in value by $5,429.91 in the past 10 years. [ Photos: Close-ups of Olympic medals ] For some sports and athletes, additional bonuses are available. Speedo gave Michael Phelps a $1 million bonus for winning eight gold medals in 2008, which he donated to charity. Depending on how he performs in London, Ryan Lochte is expected to earn six-figure bonuses from Gatorade, Speedo and other major sponsors. After wrestling came home with just one gold medal in 2008, supporters started the Living the Dream Medal Fund, which will give a quarter of a million dollars to any American wrestler who wins gold. Silvers will get $50,000 and bronzes $25,000. Both the sport-specific and corporate sponsored bonuses are in addition to the USOC. [ Related: London's preparations under siege as Olympics near ] In other countries, a medal is a major windfall for athletes, regardless of their sport or marketability. No Malaysian has won gold since 1956, but if one does this year, he or she will receive a solid gold bar valued at $600,000 from a gold mine owner in Kuala Lumpur. For the 2010 Winter Olympics, Russians received $135,000 for gold medals. Russian bronze medalists take home $54,000, more than American gold medalists get. Meanwhile, 83 USOC executives earned six-figure salaries in 2011. Fourteen of those staff members earned more than $230,000. The U.S. has the unquestionably most successful Olympic program in the world, leading the all-time gold medal count with 1,016 and overall count with 2,549. But will it continue if Olympians aren't rewarded as well as the suits at the USOC?
