Fairfield mom, daughter escape Va. ice rink collapse By Rob Varnon, STAFF WRITER / February 6, 2010 A mother and daughter from Fairfield learned Saturday that sometimes, the most dangerous place to be in a blizzard is inside.
Donna Santos and her daughter, Kristen, went to Dale City, Va., this weekend to compete in a national short track speedskating competition. Just hours after arriving for the competition, the rink they were to compete in was in ruins. It was not the only building to collapse under the weight of snow dumped in the Mid-Atlantic states by a huge storm.
"We drive up Friday," Santos said by phone. "No traffic, no snow until about 45 miles to go."
She said after a slow go, the pair made it to their hotel that night, then got up Saturday to drive five miles to the Prince William Ice Arena, where Kristen, 15, was hoping to make a good showing at the 2010 Short Track American Cup III. If she did well enough, she would have had a shot at competing in the Short Track American Cup Final & National Age Group Short Track Speedskating Championships in March -- then possibly, the Winter Olympics in 2014. She's already won a national championship for her age group in 2006.
"The roads are packed with the snow," Donna Santos said, describing her trip to the arena. "I'm thinking about getting to the rink safely. We're running a little late."
When they arrived, Kristen had to scramble. "She's throwing on her skates. We're there for maybe 10 minutes when people say, `You've got to get out.' I just booked out of there. I did look back, but I didn't see anything."
A few hours later, the arena's roof collapsed under the weight of nearly two feet of snow.
"It was that noise," Santos said, explaining that someone in the arena heard something out of place, then spotted a twisted beam. "If no one had taken that seriously, there could have been a lot of dead people."
One of the first people Donna Santos called was Kristen's coach, David Moneypenny.
"I was at a practice when I got home, and there was a phone call from (Donna Santos). They were evacuating the building," said Moneypenny. "She called me back later to say the whole building had collapsed."
Like Santos he was thankful people were paying attention.
"Literally, the cream of the crop was sitting in that building," Moneypenny said. The competition was to feature more than 100 of the nation's best young short track speedskaters. "It's kind of scary."
Moneypenny, who is a cabinet maker as well as the coach of the Fairfield County Speed Skating Club, said he always pays attention when he's in public buildings during extreme weather. In 1978, Moneypenny had a studio across the street from the Hartford Civic Center, which collapsed that year when heavy snow piled up on its roof. No one was hurt in that collapse, either.
Moneypenny said lots of ice rinks have flat roofs, but many areas of the country now send people on the roofs to remove snow to prevent collapses.
"I don't think down in Virginia and Washington they're prepared for this kind of extreme weather," Moneypenny said, but added he worries about places up north, too.
Moneypenny said his club actually had two skaters at the event.
Claude Gilbert, 15, from Spring Valley, N.Y., skates for Moneypenny and trains in Shelton.
"I was in the locker room, just sitting there with a couple other kids," Gilbert said. "I'm pretty sure I heard a noise. A groaning, creaking noise. This guy came in (talking about a twisted beam) and said, `Am I the only person's that's fazed by this?' "
Shortly after that, Gilbert said officials came "sprinting into the locker room telling everyone to get out."
"People were half-naked, half changed," he said. "We were all gathered in the lobby looking into the rink. This one I-beam had bent 90 degrees."
He said people went back to their hotels, and then an hour and a half later saw the news reports of the roof collapse.
Gilbert and Santos said they will be more observant when they go to places after this.
Santos said there is so much noise during a competition, with athletes, coaches and equipment zipping around, she was surprised someone paid attention to the sound of the beam.
She said, "It's crazy. We're just lucky to be alive. Somebody noticed that beam."

Kristen competed in Group 2 at AmCup2 – she finished fourth overall, and would have most likely finished higher, but she didn't compete in the final race - maybe she had a plane to catch after the power-outage delay(?)
