Sarah competed at US Championships in SLC (Jan 6-8, 2012). She injured her ankle in a fall in the 1500M, and was unable to compete in the rest of the meet. The good news is that she recovered nicely, and 3 weeks later, she became our Junior National Champion and will be competing at the Jr. World Championships in Australia later this month (more about that later)!
Here are her results (because of her early injury, no photos this time):
12th Overall 9-Lap Time Trial – 8th 4-Lap Time Trial - 5th 1500M - 5th (B Final) 500M – Did Not Start (Quarterfinal) 1000M – Did Not Start 3000M – Did Not Start

Sarah Chen competed at Junior US Championships in Dale City, VA (Jan 27-29, 2012). She finished 1st Overall, and is our newest Junior US Champion! She will represent the USA this coming weekend at the Junior World Championships in Melbourne, Australia - she will skate all individual distances, as well as the Relay. This will be Sarah's SECOND trip to Jr. World Championships! Here are her results: 1st Overall9-Lap Time Trial – 1st 4-Lap Time Trial - 1st 1500M – 1st (A Final) 500M – 1st (A Final) 1000M – 1st (A Final) 1500M Superfinal – Penalty* (Semifinal) *The Penalty in the Semifinals was because Sarah was still recovering from an ankle injury at the time. She didn’t need the points, so she skated to the middle of the rink when the gun went off, and incurred an off-track penalty. This is common for injured skaters, and has taken the place of the intentional double-false-start that we used to see in these situations. Whiz Kid: Champion Speedskater Sarah Chen Each week, San Marino Patch highlights a local kid, youth group, teen or sports team that wows us with their accomplishments. See who we chose this week and suggest a kid or group of kids you know for Whiz Kid of the Week. By Vivian Chan / San Marino Patch / June 1, 2012 This week's Whiz Kid is quite the speedster. Not only does she balance between her athletics and her academics, she competes on an international scale as a member of the US Short Track Speedskating World Cup team. The San Marino native has two younger siblings who are following in her skates. Whiz Kid's Name: Sarah Chen Whiz Kid's Age: 17 years old Whiz Kid's School: The Waterford School Whiz Kid's Accomplishment:Sarah competes as a member of the US Short Track Speedskating team. She won the 2012 US Junior Short Track National Championship title, age range 14-19. Sarah also competed in the World Junior Short Track Speedskating Championships in Melbourne, Australia in February of 2012 as the four-women US delegation anchor. At the 2011 ISU World Cup Short Track Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, Sarah ranked 9th in the world in the 1000 meter event. Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness:To anyone who's ever tried to ice skate before, they know that it's no easy feat. Trying to stand up, let alone staying balanced, is an accomplishment in and of itself. Now take that task and speed it up 10 times and you've got what Sarah does on a daily basis for six to seven hours per day before and after school. Having moved to Utah last year to train with the US National Sport Track Team in order to pursue her dreams of competing in the 2014 Winter Olympics, Sarah is already a five-time national champion in speedskating and has set 15 U.S. National Speedskating records and one North American Continental Short Track record. Not bad for being the youngest female skater on the US Speedskating National Team. Athletic accomplishments and prowess aside, what makes Sarah such an amazing young woman is her dedication to excel and her willingness to make tough decisions in pursuit of her dream. Even though she grew up in Southern California and maintains close relationships with all her friends back home, the decision of leaving everything familiar behind to pursue her goal was not a tough choice. Her perseverance and focus are truly admirable qualities and it is refreshing to see this young woman chase after the thing that she truly loves. Here's a very nice story about Sarah that was posted today on the USS SkateLeft blog - it looks like Sarah has been accepted to Dartmouth! The Next Chapter June 6, 2013 For most high school students, life consists of going to school, hanging out with friends and doing a few extra curricular activities to become a well-rounded student. For Sarah Chen, current Short Track National Racing Program skater, her high school life was just a little different. Between practices, homework and jet-setting around the world to race in different competitions, she has learned the value of hard work and just how far she would go to pursue her dreams.
Recently, Sarah told us her side of the story and explained where she has come from, what her life has been like the last two years and where she is headed.Read it all: skateleft.com/2013/06/06/the-next-chapter/

Here's a little blurb and some photos of Sarah from LA84 Foundation. LA84 Foundation was endowed with surplus funds from the 1984 Olympics, and would you believe in this day and age, they've used those funds wisely and are still continuing the good work that they started - supporting youth athletic programs in California's 8 southernmost counties! Southern California Speedskating has been one of the beneficiaries of their generosity. www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151790240047697.1073741850.135796917696&type=1
