I've been holding this article until Shaner got a thread here at BB, so it's from back in April - but it's a nice start to his archive! Whiz Kid: Shaner LeBauer This 14-year-old Potomac resident is making strides in speedskating.By Sarah Beth Hensley / April 1, 2011 potomac.patch.com/articles/whiz-kid-shaner-lebauerShaner wins overall bronze in the Juvenile Division at National Championships, Wausau, WI (March, 2011) Photo Credit: Allison Mittelstadt This Week's Whiz Kid: Shaner LeBauer Age: 14 School: Freshman at Sidwell Friends School Accomplishments: This Potomac resident has been speed skating for five years and recently earned a gold medal at the U.S. National Short-Track Speedskating Championship. LeBauer qualified for the prestigious American Cup series next season, which featuring the top speed skaters in the United States, including the U.S. Olympic and World team members. Key to Awesomeness: LeBauer said he first wanted to start speed skating in 2006 after seeing Apolo Anton Ohno take home golds medals for the United States in the 2002 Winter Olympics. The sport started as a fun way for him to stay conditioned for ski racing — his top sports interest at that time. Since beginning, LeBauer has excelled in speedskating, racing for the Potomac Speedskating Club and competing in the 500-meter, 1,000-meter and 1,500-meter races. LeBauer, who trains for the sport year-round, said that he loves how competitive speedskating can be. “Anything can happen in such a short time,” he said. “The mental aspect is as tough as the endurance aspect.” Speedskating will continue to be a part of LeBauer’s future, he said. “I hope to continue through college,” he said. “Professionally there really isn’t much professional speedskating, but there is the World Cup and I hope to compete in that one day.”

The following article also contains a nice video about Shaner and fellow Potomac SSC skater Lexi Burkholder, with quite a few quotes from both: Local competitive speed skaters explain what it takes to be a star athleteBy Tahmina Achekzai and Sonya Bessalel / Washington Post.com / August 17, 2012 For a sport that looks so effortless, it's amazing how exhausted the athletes are at the end of each lap. Their skates skid along the ice, and they are constantly speeding counterclockwise and crouching lower to the freezing arena. The athletes sprint with feet sliding concurrently and arms behind their backs in defiance. Their coach constantly yells "Faster, faster!" as muscles ache and legs begin to buckle. The Fast & The FuriousShort-track speedskating has taken off in Montgomery County. But even as some of the top young skaters are now coming out of this area, some of the sport’s coaches have found themselves on thin ice.By David Elfin / Bethesda Magazine / Sept/Oct 2013 Shaner LeBauer lives to compete. He has been a champion ski racer and cyclist, but the ice is where the Winston Churchill High School senior is most at home. Bent forward at the waist, his upper torso nearly horizontal to the ice, arms tucked behind his back aerodynamically, Shaner swoops across the 111-meter frozen surface at Cabin John Ice Rink in his formfitting outfit, his long strides making him seem almost like an animal pursuing its prey.
