Okay, here ya' go - did y'all know that Apolo is now the Hero in an Elizabethan-era historical romance novel??? Yup, I got a Google Alert this morning that said: Risky Regencies / Amanda's New BookOct 29, 2009 ... Today, Amanda launches her newest book, The Winter Queen ... of the mirror ball trophy was Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno. ..... When I clicked on the link, it appeared to be simply an interview with author Amanda McCabe about her new book 'The Winter Queen'. What could it possibly have to do with Apolo? I nearly deleted it, but instead I scrolled down and saw a photo of Apolo - so I hung with it a bit - and trust me, truth is stranger than fiction with this one... As it turns out, this author used Apolo as the inspiration for the book's hero, 'darkly enticing' Anton Gustavson. A portion of the interview: Question: What made you cast a Swede--and a dark-haired one at that--as the hero? Amanda: Well, he had a very unusual inspiration--Dancing With the Stars! I always knew my love of that show's ridonkulous costumes and hilariously inappropriate music would be useful someday. A few seasons ago the winner of the mirror ball trophy was Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno. I had really liked him in the Olympics, but on DWTS he was so cute and charming, and also so fiercely determined to win that fugly trophy. I couldn't figure out how to get a skating hero into an historical romance, until someone said, "Maybe he could be Dutch or something? Didn't they skate?"That's when I remembered two things: 1) The winter of 1564, when Queen Elizabeth had been on the throne for 6 years, was the coldest in memory. The Thames froze through, and at Christmas there was a Frost Fair on the river, complete with booths for food and merchandise, sledding--and skating! 2) In this time period, every eligible bachelor in Europe was after Elizabeth's hand in marriage, including King Eric of Sweden (who later went insane and was deposed by his brother, but that's another story...) He sent delegations to London to woo Elizabeth. And Swedes skate, right? So Anton Gustavson was born. (And since he was half-English, he has dark hair...) Anton is also a soldier, a spy, and a man with secrets.See the entire interview at: riskyregencies.blogspot.com/If you care to read more 'behind the book' info, check out ammandamccabe.com/resources.htmOnce upon a time I loved historical romances - hey, I just might revisit my 20's and give it a look. I'm always looking for a good vacation read... I had no idea that Apolo was part Swede! (I'll bet it's news to him, too!)

Just curious - has anyone here registered to win these Olympic tickets? (Referenced in aofreak's Billy Bush interview above) It'd be so cool if the winner was someone we knew! I'm not sure I'd go to the Olympics even if it were free - but part of my reason has to do with the logistics... the nightmare associated with transportation, lodging, etc. But if it were all done FOR me, as mentioned by Apolo, I suppose I could be coaxed away from my easy chair, hot chocolate and 20 on-demand Olympic channels... *thinking* *thinking* Stay tuned - I have some chores to do, but later this AM I'll post some 'Apolo' news that'll leave you ROTFL. All I'm gonna say is that Google Alerts are like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get... Mtnme, you're gonna LOVE this one! I DID! Just for the heck of it. It wasn't that tedious so that was nice. :]

Hey, this is a blast from the past for all Apolo fans... I had heard about the Apolo Bobbleheads that were available once-upon-a-time on his previous website. I thought they were long gone, but as it turns out, there is still a small 'stash' available, and you can order them through The Bookstore at Rocker-U... Ordering info is available at www.rocker-u.net/the_bookstore.htm#APOLO_OHNO

Fans of Apolo should be sure to tune in to Olympic coverage on the first Wednesday of the Olympics... A recent Google Alert says that Dick Ebersol thinks that the Vancouver Olympics will have strong viewership because of 4 'charismatic' athletes: Lindsey Vonn - skiier Shani Davis - LT speedskating Shaun White - snowboarding Apolo Ohno - ST speedskating He says that all 4 of these athletes will be profiled "that day and that night" of the first Wednesday's Olympic coverage. EDIT: This is an example of how inadequate my Google Alerts can be... I just noticed that Gasp posted this same info on NOVEMBER 12 on our Winter Olympics thread: Apolo Ohno will be one of the many US Olympic profiles shared with the viewing audience. His story will air the first Wednesday of the Olympics during the daytime and nighttime televised events. Why do these things take so long to get to me?

A couple of Apolo articles: A recap of Apolo's Olympic career, from the Team USA Website: Amazing Moments in Olympic History: Apolo Anton OhnoChristie Succop December 16, 2009www.teamusa.org/news/2009/12/16/amazing-moments-in-olympic-history-apolo-anton-ohno/29931----------------------------------------- Older, wiser OhnoWinner of five Olympic medals relishes his career as he aims for more. By Michael C. Lewis - The Salt Lake Tribune, Updated: 12/12/2009 06:29:35 PM MST...as Ohno prepares for what could be the final chapter of his short-track speedskating career at the 2010 Vancouver Games in two months, the 27-year-old sees himself as a far different man than the teenager who generated so much excitement here way back when. Not only has Ohno helped drive the evolution of his sport, but he has evolved in turn -- becoming what he believes is a far more powerful athlete with a wise perspective that only experience can provide. Okay, I'm thinking this can't be real... It reminds me of that (?)Gatorade(?) commercial where the ball-girl at a baseball game ran about 15 feet up the wall to catch a foul ball. Sports Challenge: Gymnast Shawn Johnson Flips Over Bobsledvideo.yahoo.com/watch/6648949/17270235Sports Challenge: Speedskater Apolo Ohno Skating Down the Lugevideo.yahoo.com/watch/6648982/17270340Well, I can almost believe Apolo skating down the luge, but Shawn flipping over a speeding bobsled??? Here's what the whole thing is about: Decorated Athletes Apolo Anton Ohno and Shawn Johnson Turn to Physical Rivalry to Settle Taste DisputeVerticalNews.com / Jan 15, 2010 First it was bringing home the gold, then it became about a disco ball trophy on TV and now two hyper-competitive athletes find themselves in stiff competition over a shared childhood favorite - Nestle Crunch. Shortly after the bar's recipe was changed, two of America's favorite gold medalists, Apolo Anton Ohno and Shawn Johnson, settled on differing ingredients that they believe make the beloved candy bar so delicious. Their competitive natures have turned a difference of opinion into a head-to-head challenge captured on video and posted on their websites. The videos showcase jaw-dropping athletic challenges in which Shawn and Apolo take their disagreement about the new recipe to a physical competition. The videos have become an online sensation, receiving more than one million combined views. "Shawn and I have great chemistry, despite our differing opinions and highly competitive nature," said speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno. "When we learned there was a new Nestle Crunch recipe, we both quickly took a stance and decided to settle this in person in true sports fashion at my training center in Utah." For each competition, Apolo and Shawn took turns showcasing their athletic prowess in speed and acrobatics, while documenting it for the world to see. "Everyone knows that Nestle Crunch has always been about the crispies and now they are even crunchier," said gymnast Shawn Johnson. "My good friend, Apolo, seems to think the chocolate makes the bar, but I know it's the crispies. No joke, we've been going back and forth about this for weeks!" "I think I proved my point," said Ohno. "But Shawn is still talking about those crispies. So we might have to go one more round to settle this once and for all when we see each other again in the New Year." The remainder of the article is biographical in nature, but to read it all: chemical-and-chemistry.verticalnews.com/articles/3005508.html+--+ A two-time overall World Cup Champion and 12-time U.S. Champion in short-track speedskating, Apolo Anton Ohno, is preparing to make U.S. history in Vancouver, Canada this coming February. One of the greatest winter athletes of all-time, Ohno launched onto the scene in 2002 in Salt Lake City, with his gold and silver medal wins and signature wavy hair and bandana. Shortly after adding more medal hardware to his collection in Torino, Italy in 2006, Ohno went on to compete and win the fourth season of the hit reality show, "Dancing with the Stars." He's since become the face of short-track speedskating around the globe and has also gone onto become a household name throughout the United States. Shawn Johnson has reached similar heights on the international stage as a four-time medalist in Beijing, World All Around Champion and two-time U.S. All Around Champion in gymnastics. Shawn was one of the most successful gymnasts in American history at the age sixteen. Shawn has become an athlete favorite with fans of all ages for showing grace under pressure in competition and a winning smile, which she proudly wore during her win on the eighth season of "Dancing with the Stars." As she contemplates competing through 2012, Shawn is finishing her high school studies and applying to colleges.
