Sarah is a skater whose name I first noticed at Jr. US Championships. She was quite impressive at that competition - finishing 7th overall, and 3rd in the 500M A Final.
She also competed at American Cup 3 in Midland, MI (February 12-13, 2011), and again finished 3rd in the 500M A Final, this time against senior-level skaters. Here are her results:
10th Overall 1500M – 6th (B Final) 500M – 3rd (A Final) 1000M – PEN (Quarterfinal) 1500M Superfinal – 5th (B Final)

Well, Miss Sarah is a 'mystery' no more! I had a chance to meet her briefly in Wausau this weekend, where she made the podium in every one of her races.
Sarah skates out of the Glen Ellyn Club in Illinois - she's 14 and a high school freshman. She started speed skating about 4 years ago, however she was out all of the 2009-2010 season because she had double knee surgery in the fall of 2009 and wasn't able to skate again until August 2010. She is SO glad to be back on the ice!
...and doing quite well!

Didn't know Sarah was a track star too! Hinsdale South sprinter's need to speedBy George M. Wilcox / PioneerLocal.com / May 4, 2011 Sarah Warren likes to go fast, whether it's on ice or on foot. The Hinsdale South freshman has been a revelation for coach Matt Guritz, who has found a sprinter from Gower Middle School in Burr Ridge although the school does not have a track and field team. Warren's first track experience was during preseason practice in January. "I fell on my face a lot," Warren said. Read More: blogs.pioneerlocal.com/sports/2011/05/hinsdale_south_sprinters_need.html+++ Tags: Sarah Warren / Short Track Speedskating But the quick learner not only qualified for the unofficial state indoor meet, in the Prep Top Times Classic in Bloomington March 26, Warren finished ninth and broke the school record in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.29. The old record was 1:00.8 set by Jamie Morris in 1989. Morris would go on to become an All-Stater in the long jump (third at state meet) and 300 hurdles (fourth) that year. "[Warren] is hard on herself," Gurwitz said. "She was to win it all, but it will take time. She's competitive. She has been fighting some knee soreness, but we have scaled back her workouts to keep her legs healthy." Warren gets her competitive nature as the youngest of two children from a sports-loving family in Willowbrook. Sarah's older brother John played football for the Hornets and will graduate later this month. He will play safety for Division III University of Chicago next season. Her father, Morrison, played football in college and still plays some rugby. His wife, Cathy, played many sports. "I always wanted to be just like by big brother," Sarah said. But long before Sarah Warren decided to run track, she already won several competitions as both a short- and long-track speed skater. Warren competes for the Glen Ellyn Speedskating Club and trains at the Edge in Bensenville for short track and at the Pettit Center in Milwaukee for long track. Several months ago, Warren was invited to a camp in June held by USA Speedskating in Salt Lake City. Sarah's first time on the ice though came as a hockey player at age 7. She was one of a few girls playing with the Chicago Blues travel team in Bensenville. Warren's career as a defenseman, playing mainly with boys, lasted one season but the team won the state championship. Because Warren isn't ready to specialize, there are no Olympic plans on her agenda yet. Many Olympic hopefuls her age leave school and their family to train full time in Salt Lake or Milwaukee, which have the only Olympic-sized ovals in the country. "I'm out to try all level of experiences with other sports," Warren said. "I like the social aspect of seeping people every day. I'll try as many options as I can and take advantage of it." Sarah suffered a setback on her speed skating development last year when she missed six months after having surgery in each knee to remove plica tissue. The tissue covers the knee, but usually disappears in child development. Warren felt her knees became inflammed while playing for the Academy Soccer Club in Schaumburg. Warren finished fourth in the 400 (1:00.22) and fifth in the 100 (12.91) at the 34th annual Wheaton Warrenville South Invitational Friday night. Hinsdale South's only winner was 2010 state qualifier Uzo Okoro, who won the triple jump (35-feet-2 1/2). Warren will make her debut in the West Suburban Gold meet at 4 p.m. Friday at Hinsdale South. "The challenge for her is to be patient," Guritz said of Warren. "Compared to the average freshman, she's stronger in the lower half [due to skating]. She has a good push. She's used to competing. She's used to pain."[/img]

Whiz Kid: Sarah Warren The three-sport athlete will be competing in the Junior Olympics this winter.By Julie Kallas / November 2, 2011 burrridge.patch.com/articles/whiz-kid-sarah-warrenName: Sarah Warren Age: 15 Grade: Sophomore School: Hinsdale South High School Accomplishment: Warren runs indoor and outdoor track for Hinsdale South's teams, in addition to playing soccer for the Academy Soccer Club in Schaumburg and speed skating in Glen Ellyn. Key to Awesomeness: Warren used to play hockey with boys her age as well, but as she got older and there wasn't a comparable girls' league, "my parents were worried I was going to get hurt," she said. Eventually, she switched over to speed skating and fell in love with the sport. This past weekend, Warren competed in the American Cup II in Cleveland. The event was a qualifying trial for the Winter Youth Olympic Games, which will take place this coming January in Innsbruck, Austria. Warren won the trial, making her the female representative for Team USA in short track speed skating (she will travel to Innsbruck with the male rep, Thomas Hong). "I was lucky enough to qualify to represent the U.S.," Warren said. "It was a hard competition...I'm lucky the cards went my way." What’s Next: Although she's focused on doing well at the Youth Olympic Games for now, Warren hopes it's the first step toward a bigger goal. "I hope to make it to the Olympics [for speed skating]," she said, adding that she would also like to either play soccer or run track in college. "[At the Youth Olympic Games] I hope to learn and gain experience from it." Warren, whose favorite subject at South is history, is looking at several Midwestern colleges, including Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, the University of Notre Dame (where both of her parents went to law school), and the University of Michigan (where her mother was an undergrad). She also hopes to follow in the footsteps of another family member: her brother, John, who tore both of his ACLs in his last two years of high school and had to have double ACL surgery. He now plays football for the University of Chicago. "He had a pretty tough year as a junior and senior," Warren said. "He's my role model."

Hinsdale South Student Excels in School, on Ice Hinsdale South High School student Sarah Warren will represent Team USA in short track speed skating at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Austria.By Erin Sauder / November 28, 2011 Life is a balancing act for Hinsdale South High School student Sarah Warren. The avid speed skater also participates in soccer and track and field, and is enrolled in an all honors course-load. “When you throw all that in the mix you do give up some social life,” Warren said. “But you have to put it in perspective.” In January, Warren will have even more on her plate. She is heading to Innsbruck, Austria, to represent Team USA in short track speed skating at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games. She will compete in the 500m and 1000m distances, and the mixed 3000m relay. Read More: burrridge.patch.com/articles/hinsdale-south-student-excels-in-school-on-ice “I’m very excited,” Warren said of her achievement. She qualified for the the Junior Olympics after competing in the American Cup II in Cleveland in October. Warren has been speed skating for five years. “I used to play hockey with the guys but as the guys got older they got bigger,” Warren said. “I still wanted to stay in the ice so my mom asked if I wanted to try speed skating. I absolutely loved it and stuck with it.” She usually spends a few hours every day practicing her skating. “My honest goal is to make it to the real Olympics,” Warren said. “If I keep working at it hopefully I’ll achieve it.” She’d like to qualify for the winter 2014 Olympics, but if not, “Definitely 2018 — hopefully I’ll be able to make it,” she said. In Austria, Warren will have many family members there rooting for her. “Most of my family is going which is really nice,” she said. “I’ll have a support group there.” “We are just so proud of her,” said Warren’s mother, Catherine. “She put a lot of work into this and she loves it. We’re really happy for her.” Warren is looking forward to her trip overseas. “I’ve never been over an ocean so this should be an interesting experience,” she said.[/img] Tags: Sarah Warren / Short Track Speedskating +++

Local speed skater heads to Winter Youth OlympicsBy Sara Smith / Glen Ellyn News / Jan 05, 2012 Glen Ellyn, IL — In five years, 15-year-old Sarah Warren has gone from learning to speed skate to participating in the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games. Sarah, a member of the Glen Ellyn Speed Skating Club who lives in Willowbrook, will travel to Innsbruck, Austria from Jan. 10, through Jan. 22 for the Youth Olympic Games. The Hinsdale South High School sophomore is the top female competitor in the U.S. for short track speed skating. She was selected after being the top female qualifier at the America’s Cup meet in Cleveland, Ohio in October.[/img] “Obviously I’m a little nervous, but I’m more excited,” Sarah said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Sarah joined the Glen Ellyn Speed Skating Club five years ago after playing hockey for several years. “It seems like we’re just skating in a circle, but there’s a lot of technique... to work on,” she said. Carl Cepuran, head coach of the Glen Ellyn Speed Skating Club, said Sarah’s a genuinely sweet person who works really hard. “She’s a straight-A student, a really nice person and turns on the switch when she steps on the ice,” he said. “She turns into the Terminator.” Read More: www.mysuburbanlife.com/glenellyn/topstories/x1819710228/Local-speed-skater-heads-to-Winter-Youth-OlympicsThis year marks the first winter Youth Olympic Games for competitors who are 14 to 18 years old. According to Cepuran, Sarah’s passion for both long and short track speed skating is unique and has been beneficial to her. “The variety (between practicing short and long track) keeps skating fresh,” he said. “The combination is really beneficial because she has both powerful straight-aways... and strong corners.” Sarah’s said she doesn’t know the other competitors’ times, but she’s planning on having a lot of fun because except for a trip to Mexico, this will be her first time leaving the country. Sarah is the fifth skater from the Glen Ellyn Speed Skating Club to compete in winter Olympic Games. In 1960, Keith Meyer competed in the 1960 winter Olympics, Dorie Boyce went in 1984, Shana Sundstrom took part in 1994 and Becky Sundstrom skated in 1998 and 2002. The Glen Ellyn skating club has programs for those learning to speed skate as well as an advanced program. The advanced program has skaters who range in age from 7 to 60, Cepuran said. The club, which practices in Addison, Park Ridge and Milwaukee, has skaters from DuPage, Will, Kane and Cook counties, as well as from northwest Indiana, Kankakee, Rockford and southeast Wisconsin. “Although it’s an individual sport, the club makes it a team-or club-oriented activity,” Cepuran said. Occasionally on Saturdays when Lake Ellyn freezes over, the club hosts informal novice races for anyone who wants to try speed skating. Cepuran said club leaders try to recruit new kids into the sport and give them the resources to reach their goals. “In Olympic sports, there’s a focus on the elite and potential medal winners, but we feel that there’s no need to ignore the rest of the participants who want to do it for fun and recreation,” he said. Oops. I posted this article for Thomas Hong, and forgot to copy it to Sarah's thread! Sarah is in Innsbruck, Austria and is one of 2 skaters representing the USA at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games. He will be skating the 1000M on Jan 18, the 500M on Jan 19, and the relay (mixed genders/countries) on Jan 21. Both Sarah and Thomas start competing TOMORROW MORNING (Wednesday in the USA). Now, speedskating “is all I watch,” she said.
Warren always hoped to compete on a big stage, but she never expected it to be in speedskating. She was a hockey player until five years ago.
“I played with the guys,” she said. “They got bigger and I stayed the same size, so my parents were worried I was going to get hurt.
“I still wanted to skate, though.”
While attending one of her brother’s hockey games, she noticed people speedskating on another rink.
“I tried it, and I absolutely fell in love with it,” she said. “I’ve stuck with it since then.Thomas Insuk Hong races across the ice, keeping his eye on his competitors, but with his mind really only focused on one main thing. Speed. “It’s exhilarating to go fast,” the 14-year-old short track speed skater said. “It’s a completely self-powered sport, so all the efforts you make translate directly into speed. It’s just fun being out there to show my capabilities.” (Thomas) Hong, from Laurel, Md., and Sarah Warren, 15, from Willowbrook, Ill., will showcase their abilities on a new stage at the Winter Youth Olympic Games, which run from Jan. 13-22 in Innsbruck, Austria. “The farthest I’ve been out of the country is Cabo (San Lucas), Mexico,” Warren said. “It’s going to be a whole new experience for me.” Both are expected to compete in the 500-meter and 1000-meter races, as well as the mixed 3000-meter relay. Coached by Joe Rohraff, they will be the first class of Team USA for the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games. The Games will feature athletes from around the world competing in several sports, including alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling, ice hockey, ice skating, luge and snowboarding. To qualify, Hong and Warren finished first among Group 2 athletes at the American Cup II last October in Cleveland. Hong hardly expected this when he first laced up the skates when he was about 5. “I just had fun out there,” he said. “Now, here I am.” He has competed in several speedskating events, but “nothing quite this big,” he said. From a young age, Warren watched the Olympic Games, but admitted speedskating wasn’t “on my radar.” She was more interested in snowboarding and other sports. Now, speedskating “is all I watch,” she said. Warren always hoped to compete on a big stage, but she never expected it to be in speedskating. It’s a part of my life now. I am so happy. I’ve come so far, but I have to keep my eyes open because there’s still so far to go.” Should Hong and Warren continue on their current paths, Olympic berths could be in their futures. Hong isn’t even thinking of the Olympic Winter Games yet, though. “I’m just seeing where this takes me,” he said. “(The Olympic Games) would be great, but I don’t even know what’s going to happen tomorrow.” Warren, on the other hand, is already pointing toward the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. “That is my definite goal,” she said. As for the Winter Youth Olympic Games, Hong and Warren are simply eager to experience the event. They will be in Innsbruck for 10 days, taking in the sights and meeting new people. “I just know there’s going to be a lot of people from a lot of different countries representing their individual sports,” Hong said. “I think it’s just going to be more of a fun experience and something we can look back on. Of course, I want to win, but we’ll have to see what happens.” Warren said the itinerary the athletes have received includes several opportunities to learn about other cultures, meet people from around the world and prepare the young athletes for what the Olympic stage might be like should they get there in the future. “The main thing I think they’re trying to get out of this experience is for us to compete against international skaters, but also for the young kids to get the Olympic experience,” she said. “They have tons of things, where you learn culturally about all the other countries.” The emphasis on enjoying the experience suits her just fine. “I’m a really fun, spirited person,” she said. “I like to have fun and enjoy the experience. When race time comes, I’m very serious. Before that, I will try to enjoy the experience. “I want to get the experience to where I can see how it is on the world stage. Of course, I want to win, but I’m mainly going for the experience of being on a world stage, and having the press conferences and meeting people from around the world.”[/img] Read More: youtholympicgames.teamusa.org/news/2012/01/12/speed-skaters-ready-for-winter-youth-olympic-games/46098#.TxCyqCEIuSxTags: Sarah Warren / Thomas Insuk Hong / Short Track Speedskating / Youth Olympic Games +++

Based on the data feed, it looked like Sarah was doing great in the C Final, but fell and finished 4th. Her Glen Ellyn Speed Skating Club is reporting that her time in the 1000M Quarterfinals (1:40.397) was a personal best.
