I use to be an inline skater and wanted to get back into it, mostly because I just enjoy skating. Locally there are no rinks offering speed skating but there is an ice rink. I went and tried it out and it was a lot of fun. I have a pair of Bont RedBacks that I used for inline that I would like to use for ST. I am looking to try to find a ST blade, but I have no idea what I need or if I can maybe get one used etc.... I am about 5'10'' 150 lbs and wear a size 8 boot. I do not even know how long of a blade I need. Was hoping someone might have some ideas or suggestions.

Hi - and welcome to the board! Most of us who post on this board are fans rather than skaters, and wouldn't be able to answer that question with any degree of expertise. What I HAVE picked up is that most short track speedskaters use a blade that's 17" to 18" long. If it's long track you're interested in, I don't know - the long-trackers use a 'clap-skate' that's detatched from the boot in the back. A lot of the ST skaters use Maple Gold or Maple Duro blades, but there may be something more inexpensive that you could use as entry level. I 'think' you can use the same boots for speedskating and inline, but I really don't know. One other thing to consider is that if you have ice blades, you'll probably want (or maybe need) to also invest in the equipment needed to sharpen them - or would ice rinks have some type of service to do that for you? I'd suggest contacting someone from a speedskating club in your state (you can find a list of clubs at - OR, on that same website, you could contact someone involved with the USS WHIP (Wheels-To-Ice-Program). Those would surely be the best sources of information for you in making the transition. ...Unless there's a skater or coach peeking in who might want to answer the question. This particular thread does allow Guest (anonymous) comments. Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress!

Maddogs are fine for beginners but most used by youth skaters. I think the Maple Duro 17" would be a better option for you.
Where are you? I maybe able to get you some gently used blades.

Just a quick 'tutorial' note that may be helpful to sk8trmom, doomedfailure and others who may be new to ProBoards forums.
I just want to make sure that everyone knows how to utilize the Personal Message (PM) feature. It's only available to members, but it's a great resource for situations like this where people may want or need to exchange information that you don't want to be seen on the open board (such as email addresses, etc.)
You'll see notifications of Messages in the upper right section of the forum - but you can also adjust your message settings to be notified (either here or even via email) if you get a Personal Message.
Thanks, sk8trmom for your help!
