^ i saw this on this on the news last night - nice one guys! the UK speedskaters are really doing well this season! Ha - I thought you'd like this one, Rockfairy! sk8er - Blake competed in World Cups 3, 4 & 5, but as far as I know, he was the only New Zealander to skate. He did not compete in World Cup 6, which may mean he was at home (in Christchurch, NZ) when the earthquake hit - I hope he and his family are okay...

Great article, Rockfairy - I really enjoyed reading it. Jack's so young, but has such promise. I'm happy for his success thus far in Courmayeur - and the weekend's not over yet! ;D (Still wondering what happened in today's 500M Final that got him a PEN - I'm kicking my own a$$ for nodding off...)

When looked the men 1500m final on the Jr. World Champ's, we have noticed him. He should be a future star. He is in favor with us oh!

Record breaker Whelbourne ready to deliver in SheffieldJACK Whelbourne insists every sacrifice is worth it as he prepares to lead the home challenge at this weekend's short track speed skating World Championships in Sheffield. By Arvind Nair, Sportsbeat / March 10, 2011 RISING STAR: Jack Whelbourne won bronze at the recent World Junior Championship and double bronze at last year's European Championships (Getty Images)Whelbourne made an encouraging senior debut at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, claimed double bronze at last year's European Championships and a third place on the podium at the recent World Junior Championships. It's little wonder that team officials believe he has the best chance of success at global level since Nicky Gooch, now a coach to the British team, won Olympic bronze at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics. "I can't really stress how excited I am about getting on home soil for the first time and getting selected for my individual spot through winning the British trials earlier this season. It's taken a lot of pressure off my shoulders," he said. "I've tried to put the Junior World Championships to the back of my mind because this is my last year before I become a senior. "I'm peaking at the right time and I am skating the best I've ever skated, so I'm going to go out and do my best. "I'm only 19 and I don't really have a social life now because I chose skating as my life. But I'm happy with that sacrifice and I'd do it again in an instant." Whelbourne has high hopes for Great Britain's relay team after he joined forces with RIchard Shoebridge, Paul Stanley and Jon Eley to break the 5,000m world record at the recent World Cup, justifying their UK Sport funding boost ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics. "We've had some up and down results but the world record proves we could do it," he added. "We believe we are one of the top teams now and with the funding we can go and get the results. "We've been skating pretty strong and we opted not to skate the second lot of World Cups to train hard. We chose to stay home, commit hard to training and then see what happens."[/img] Read More: www.morethanthegames.co.uk/rising-stars/1014113-record-breaker-whelbourne-ready-deliver-sheffieldTags: Jack Whelbourne / Richard Shoebridge / Paul Stanley / Jon Eley / Short Track Speedskating +++

Here's the GBR team for the Fall World Cups: ... Relay world record holders Jon Eley, Paul Stanley, Richard Shoebridge and Jack Whelbourne all retained their position on the squad along with top female skater Elise Christie who knocked two seconds off her personal best in the time trial.
Ian Upcott was the fifth member on the men’s side with Christie being joined by Alex Whelbourne and Charlotte Gilmartin. Four Junior men were also selected to train alongside the senior athletes: Tristton, Adams, Josh Cheetham and Billy Simms, Murray Cochrane.... Read More: www.gbshorttrack.org/index.php?news&nid=6
