Nice pic of Jon! USANA Announces Partnership With Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--USANA Health Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: USNA - News), a worldwide leader in science-based nutritional supplements, announced today it has signed a two-year agreement to be the official supplement supplier of the Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating Team. The team, which includes decorated skater Jon Eley, is gaining more recognition as it prepares for the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia. Eley has won two World Cup silver medals this season and is ranked third in the world in the 500m event. In 2008, the men’s relay team earned a bronze medal at the Short Track Speed Skating World Championships and a silver medal at the Short Track Speed Skating European Championships. "The National Ice Skating Association (NISA) welcomes this exciting partnership between Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating and USANA,” said NISA General Secretary Keith Horton. “USANA is our first major sponsor in a great number of years, and we are pleased to be associated with such a prestigious and internationally renowned company. This partnership will benefit the athletes and raise the profile of not only NISA but USANA as well." USANA manufactures a wide variety of nutritional products that are trusted by some of the world’s best athletes. USANA voluntarily follows current Good Manufacturing Practices based on pharmaceutical models for its quality assurance program, meaning its nutritional supplements are treated with the same care that goes into manufacturing pharmaceutical products. Six USANA nutritional supplements recently received independent certification through NSF International's Certified for Sport(TM) program. "USANA is proud to be partnering with Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating and the premier athletes that make up this talented team," said USANA CEO Dave Wentz. "It is important that these world-class athletes have access to high-quality nutritionals they can trust. We wish them all the best at the upcoming British Championships."

www.loughboroughecho.net/loughborough-sport/other-sport/2010/01/22/eley-aiming-to-end-medal-drought-73871-25646243/Eley aiming to end medal droughtJan 22 2010 by Richard Rush, Loughborough Echo Short track speed skater Jon Eley is using his coach as his perfect form of inspiration as he aims to end Great Britain’s 16-year wait for a medal in next month’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The 25-year-old Loughborough College student is delighted to have former bronze medallist Nicky Gooch by his side as he eyes his best chance of personal glory. “Nicky is a great coach - he’s been our head coach now for the last four years and he’s done so many things to improve my skating. “He’s obviously been there and done it and he’s a good person to have around and to talk to.” Eley, who came to prominence as a fresh-faced 21-year-old at the Turin Olympics where he came a hugely creditable fifth in the 500m, was ranked third in the world last season when he collected two silver medals in the six events. And he believes he will be at his best come the ultimate challenge in Canada. “Training has been going very well and I traditionally get my best results in February, so the timing couldn’t be better,” said Eley, who is studying for a BTEC in sports science. “We’re off to a training camp in Calgary on January 28 to help with acclimatisation for Vancouver. The Olympics is the pinnacle for my sport without any doubt. It’s not usually well televised in this country but this is a stage to perform in front of viewers from all over the world. “The world championships are actually in Bulgaria in March but my plan is to be at my absolute peak for the Olympics, then just hold on and give what I’ve got left in Sofia.” Eley is again focusing on the 500m as his best medal chance, although he is also due to compete over 1,000m and believes GB also has a “decent medal chance” in the four-man relay event. “It’s very exciting. I’m at a very good stage of my career and, although I still believe I can improve further, this realistically is my chance,” says Eley, who says that temperatures at the ice rink in Nottingham where he has been training have actually been colder than what he will experience in Canada.” Eley has understandably put his studies on ice, along with the other GB skaters, but is also enjoying his distance learning course. “It’s provided me with a great chance to learn more about sport and gain an academic award that will help me in the future. I also enjoy sharing some of the knowledge I have picked up in psychology, nutrition and physiotherapy through my career. “The course is a good distraction from training and can help me to look at things when I’m going through a rough patch.”

Well, it looks like we'll be seeing Jon Eley for the next 4 years! news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/olympic_games/vancouver_2010/bobsleigh/8537933.stmEley's individual campaign in Vancouver came to an end in disappointing fashion when he finished third from four in the 'B' final, ahead only of South Korea's Ho-Suk Lee, who cruised round in last place.
"It was always going to be tough to get a medal and it wasn't my race today," said Eley.
"I would have liked a medal and that's what I trained for and came here for but sixth place isn't too bad.
"I think the last three or four years have been really good and the key thing is for it to start from day one in terms of looking at the next Games, not just starting when the next Games are on the horizon.
"I still believe I can go to Sochi and win a medal. There's still a lot more to come and I can get technically better."[/b]

Christie ready to shine with right backing By Holly Hamilton, Sportsbeat / March 22, 2010 ELISE Christie is ready to consistently perform at the highest level after her impressive showing in Sofia this weekend, according to British team performance director Stuart Horsepool. BAGS OF POTENTIAL: Elise Christie just missed out on the podium after finishing fourth at the World Championships in Bulgaria (Getty Images)But the teenager will only be able to do so if the sport secures enough funding from UK Sport's upcoming review insists the team boss. The 19-year-old yet again underlined her promise by only just missing out on a medal at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Bulgaria as she finished fourth in the 1000m. After a European silver medal in January, Christie travelled to last month's Winter Olympics looking to prove herself on the world stage but the former figure skater struggled in all three of her events. But Horsepool believes Vancouver provided a steep learning curve for the teenager and she has come out the other side with more experience and stronger than ever before. Read the entire story: www.morethanthegames.co.uk/short-track-speed-skating/2210018-christie-ready-shine-with-right-backing+++ Tags: Elise Christie / Short Track Speedskating "Elise did really well even to make the final in Sofia and she skated some great times throughout the rounds to get there," he said. "It was the first time she reached a World Championship final and she is gaining experience all the time. "She is only 19 and it usually takes a long time for athletes to get used to competing at this level. "We know the potential Elise has and we want her development to continue so she can start reaching the podium in the biggest events." But the Horsepool believes this development will not be able to continue at the right level unless the sport receives more funding. With UK Sport set to conduct their winter sports review in April, it is likely a number of sports will see their funding cut, rather than increased, after a disappointing overall performance by the team in Vancouver, which saw Britain bring home just one medal courtesy of Amy Williams gold in the skeleton. Short track speed skating has never been part of UK Sport's pathway funding which includes the three levels of talent, development and podium and Horsepool would like to see that rectified. And he insists that the whole British short track team will only be able to progress if funding is secured in the long-term to allow upcoming stars such as Christie and Jon Eley to make the most of their ability. "We are still not quite hitting the medals at the major competitions, although we are doing that at a European and junior level," added Horsepool. "When we talk with UK Sport during their review process we will ask for consistent funding, which is something we've never had before. "Our funding is extremely low compared to other countries and we want to see that change for the better. "The sport is growing in terms of the medals available and now with a stronger global profile, so we can't just be brushed aside as a small sport anymore. "Pathway funding would make all the difference to us especially when we have both athletes coming through and those that are so close to making the podium at the highest level."[/img]

Forgive me if I'm missing the obvious - but are Alex Whelbourne and Jack Whelbourne related?

Whoa! A huge congratulatins Brits! I remember being in Madison, WI for a WC a few years ago when the Canadians made an attempt to break the relay world record. They just missed I think but just being there watching them was amazing. Yes, the Brits have steadily gotten better over the last few years and that's all good for short track. (I wish the New Zealand team was still skating....or are they? I really like Blake Skjellerup, all heart and they did it on an absoluteshoestring....)
