In order to protect the individual skaters' threads from going off-topic, and to give our members a fledging avenue to talk about other things, we've created ONE off-topic thread to give y'all a little flexibility.
There are several great boards and blogs out there where skating (and skater) fans can chat about non-skating topics, and it isn't our intent to duplicate these sites, so we are NOT currently offering members the ability to create their own threads on this board.
Hopefully this thread will suffice for the time being! ;D

Sunshine, I'm actually GOING to the ladies' final tomorrow night! *squeeeeal* One of our friends bought a ticket for their college-age daughter who had something else come up, so they gave me her ticket! ;D It's Larry's birthday tomorrow, but he totally understands - we'll celebrate on Sunday.

All 3 of your 'girls' were amazing tonight! You almost had a clean sweep, but Asada just missed the podium (4th). It was fun!

Lori, thanks for the report from the scene. Glad you had a good evening. I found the skating on the small screen of the internet and watched the ladies long program. The US ladies got awards from me: Alissa Czisny for Best Dress, very original filmy fabrics overlaid in beautiful colors, and very flattering, too. Maybe other dresses were awesome when seen live but the overdone beads on many of the skaters got repetitious. IMO Rachael Flatt for Great Personality expressed joyfully during her skating.

THE KENTUCKY DERBY>>>
O-M-G!!!!! What a race!!!!
Mine That Bird was NOT in my top three, didn't see (barely) a prayer that he would win, but I LOVE his jockey, Calvin Borel (won with Street Sense 2 years ago).
I love Calvin enough that I memorized his colors and number in the post parade - okay, 'just in case'. When the race started, I saw one poor horse/jockey struggling 10+ lengths behind the rest of the pack, and strained to hear who it was... *sigh*... Calvin - I basically wrote 'em off.
However, this was a race for the record books. The announcer didn't pick up this horse until he was several lengths in the lead (and pulling away) well into the home stretch - he came up THAT fast! The overhead replay was freakin' AMAZING!!! LAST in the final turn, FIRST across the finish line!
Those other horses might as well have been standing still... 'don't know how this li'l horse will fare in the Triple Crown grind, but hey, I'm behind him (and my Southern Boy Calvin) ALL da' WAY!

Welcome back, it sounds like you had a GREAT time. Yes, we did! We adore our new daughter-in-law - the only downside was saying goodbye yesterday to everyone, including our older son & his wife who had to fly home. It's great to get together with old friends and tell the stories of our lives yet another time - with all the young'uns laughing with us! I can see that you've been a busy girl while I've been gone - it was fun reading all the cool new stuff!

I have the house to myself all weekend, so I'm catching up on some long-neglected Google Alerts - which is why you're seeing so many new posts!
Don't get spoiled though - life returns to normal on Monday. ;D

Booked flights today for the Florida-LSU football game in October, and to Thailand for the Habitat for Humanity Jimmy Carter Work project in November.
We'll be eating Beanie Weenies / Chef BoyArRobinson for the next 6 months - and the dog's gonna have to fend for herself...

Okay, Facebook hates me tonight - if you're my Friend there, you either won't see this AT ALL, or you'll see it THREE TIMES, which is how many times I tried to send it with no apparent results... Check out Good Morning America tomorrow (Tuesday) - they're raising the first wall on our new build site in Lynwood, CA! It was kind'a odd today with people in hard hats laying out the first-floor walls with Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog in the background rehearsing "RAISE THOSE WALLS!!!" I don't work tomorrow, 'cause I'm not a Disney or SWA employee, but my husband Larry is a Crew Leader and might be seen in the background somewhere... EDIT: Nothing on GMA today... so much for all of our work yesterday - that's television!

I was in New Orleans from Thursday 'till laaaate last night, and the 'Big Easy' never lets me down! One of my husband's bud's got tickets for the LSU-Florida game in Baton Rouge (yay Gators! ), but his wife Rita and I stayed behind in their French Quarter apartment for the weekend. On Friday night Rita and I went to opening night of the Opera (Tosca), with a pre-performance reception that was interrupted by a frog-strangling storm. The wind came up so high that some of the accoutrements ended up in the pond. I learned that Creole food doesn't float - and neither do Creole chefs. Rita thought that it was a bit weird that I wanted to stand outside under the eaves and watch the storm - but hey, we don't get this stuff in SoCal very often... Fun Fact: New Orleans is the Birthplace of Opera in the U.S. I did not know that. I've never been to an Opera before, and I would have bet my last crawfish that I would be bored to tears - but it was really way COOL! (Either that or I'm getting way OLD...) I was worried about this 'country girl' fitting in, but there was denim mixed with diamonds, so I felt right at home - I was wearing neither, but I'll assure you, I'm a lot closer to the 'denim' crowd... On Saturday night we watched the Big Game in the Foundation Room at the House of Blues. The Black Crowes were playing downstairs, so we bounced back and forth between the game and the music. Our most memorable companions for the night were: 1) a young guy in a top hat, tails and bowtie - he said he 'just likes to dress up' but he finally admitted that he was a doorman at a hotel 'cause his parents had cut him off financially for bad grades, 2) four members of a bachelor party who wanted Rita to sneak them in to the Black Crowes concert (which she did), and we made friends for life - if anyone needs sports betting advice, I now have a 'connection' , and 3) an unscrupulous cab driver who took us to Burgundy Street (6 blocks away) by way of 'Houston', thinking we were just dumb tourists who wouldn't know any different. I was ready to 'stiff' him, but Rita wisely advised me to 'let it go'. Anyhow - 'twas gooood, but it's also goooood to be home.

A couple of weeks ago, my husband put his UCLA/Cal tickets up on Craig's list, 'cause we couldn't go to the game. The person who bought them was flying in from NC for the game, but was going to have his buddy pick them up the night before. The 'buddy' called me - said "hey, my name's Shaun White, I need directions to your house to pick up the football tickets..." Huh? I've seen/heard many interviews with Shaun White, and I have to say, this guy's voice was a dead ringer for him. My head said "no way, there are hundreds, if not thousands of 'hey, dude-esque' Shaun White's in this world" - but my heart was pounding as I answered the door when he came to pick up the tickets. Was it him? Not even close.
