The last event of the day is the men’s 5000m relay quarterfinals. USA is in the second heat against France, China and Japan. Canada is in the third (and last) heat against Hungary, Great Britain and Germany. The top 2 relays and the next 2 fastest thirds qualify for the Semifinals.
Skaters for the US are Eddy Alvarez, J.R. Celski, Jordan Malone and Chris Creveling. Skaters for Canada are Francois Hamelin, Charles Hamelin, Olivier Jean and Michael Gilday.
They appear to be running a bit behind as the men's relay was supposed to start about 5 minutes ago.

Something happened to the South Korean men in their quarterfinal, they finish 4th and won't advance to the semifinals (aka the top 8)! The highest they can possibly finish a this point is 10th!

Canada wins their quarterfinal as well!
That's all the racing for today. Tomorrow races start at approximately the same time that they have started the last 2 days with the 1500m quarterfinals. I don't believe that the stream starts until the 1500m semifinals at 2:00pm local time (8:00amEST and 5:00amPST). -------------- Men's 5000m Relay Quarterfinals

Lori appears to be down for the count (hopefully she's just sleeping and hasn't suffered any ill-fated silverware or ceiling fan accidents ) so I'll post an update. THANK YOU sk8erfan for picking up the ball that I dropped this morning. My intent was to only sleep in the break between the 1000M & Relays - but I overslept in a major way (just woke up)! But I woke up to good news - congrats to the relay teams on their good performances! And yeah, no Korean Men's team - wow. Anybody know what happened to them?

had to do a double take for the pictures of Charles Hamelin. Not used to seeing him without the beard...[/quote]
The guys on the Canadian team are growing moustaches for Movember therefore Charles shaved the beard off at the beginning of the month. By the end of November they'll all have cheesy moustaches. If anyone wants to donate (it's for prostate cancer and men's mental health) you can find their page on the Movember Canada website under Canadian Olympic Team or you can search for each guy under their own name. It's a great cause.

I'm feeling really good about the men's prospects for a relay medal They are skating consistently well! J.R. 's break from skating shows...you just have to dedicate yourself completely for some years to master the skills and strategy. It becomes almost intuitive at that point. But the speed and determination are there, and anything can happen. I'm actually excited about the Ahn Hyun Soo (Viktor An) comeback. He was in a very bad accident, missed the 2010 Olympics, has not had access to that famous/infamous Korean coaching and is 29, but he is advancing consistently. He has been out of the loop for several years, and just look at him. Ummmmm.......are the Canadian guys going to sell hairs of those beards like First Class Short Track Relics? 0_0

Here's the direct link to the team's page: ca.movember.com/team/1127645I'm gonna copy this to the Canadian Chat thread - 'cause as soon as the skating starts tonight it'll get 'buried'... Speaking of the competition, IceNetwork's video stream starts tonight! Skating starts at 3:35am Eastern, 12:35am Pacific. The 1500M and 500M distances will be raced tonight - all the way to the podium! The video stream is scheduled to start with the 1500M Semifinals (about 8am Eastern, 5am Pacific).

Uh-Oh - Jessica's out. She was in third, but something happened in Lap 12 - maybe she fell, 'cause she ended up about 30 seconds back...
