According to the US Speed skating website the deadline to register for the Short Track Olympic Trials was the December 23rd. Late registrations are accepted but there is a pretty big late fee and looking at the names I can't think of anyone else that would be added (but then again I'm not as familiar with the American skaters). Here's the list of skaters that are registered for Olympic Trials:

Shameful pricing for sure unless of course one has eyes on the hospitality package beforehand. I refuse to encourage their holiday madness for either the LT or ST trials. Therefore I will be at home watching what might be available for free! There was a time when I would pay, but no more. USS still seems to be a mess on many levels. There is very little drawing me to the sport these days.

...I will be at home watching what might be available for free! Tony Chung will be reporting, but no video - he says he'll be posting times for TT's on his Google Docs link. Keep checking his Twitter (@shorttrackhd) for more info. I'll have my IPad with me in the rink and will try to post results and answer questions during zamboni breaks as well.

We had an absolutely BEAUTIFUL drive from L.A. to SLC today - NO traffic, not even in L.A! The sun was shining, vapor trails in a blue sky, snowy fields (and dry roads) - and there was a gorgeous sunset to welcome us into the SLC metro area! Had a picnic dinner in our room while chatting with a skater mom who has been a dear friend for years, picked up one of the 'posse' from the airport, and ran into a long-track skater in the lobby that we hosted 2 years ago. That's what's so much fun - re-connecting with friends that we would never run into anywhere but a ST competition! AND my SLC-based brother will be going to the Time Trials with us tomorrow (it's his birthday)! I'll leave the up-to-the-minute posting of times to Tony (as I said above, check his Twitter @shorttrackhd for info on the proper link to his Google doc), 'cause he's far better at that than I am - but I'll most definitely post any fill-in-the-blanks info that I think will be helpful. And of course, I'll post the final results! If anyone has questions, please post them and I (or other members) will do our best to answer them! Tony has posted the pairings for the 1000M Time Trials. Top 16 move on in the competition. I don't see that they're having a 'Group 2' competition, so I suppose that if you don't make Top 16 you are done for the weekend. www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151777192621218&set=a.10150269123791218.335411.648801217&type=1&theaterLADIES: Jerebelle Yutangco Tamara Frederick Jacqueline Chen Kimberly Goetz Kristen Santos Katy Ralston Amanda Trimble Resurface Alyson Dudek Jessica Smith Emily Scott Sarah Chen Allison Baver Lexi Burkholder April Shin Lana Gehring Kimberly Derrick Brittany Salmon MEN: Landon Hatfield Kyle Uyehara Casey Mullarkey Robert Lawrence Ian Quinn Brett Perry Ryan Pivirotto Jake Powers Mikey Burdekin Thomas Insuk Hong Resurface Keith Carroll Jr. Jordan Malone Chris Creveling J.R. Time Trials start at 1pm Mountain Time today, and I believe it's actually when warmups start - so don't be concerned if you don't see results right away. I'll check in here periodically. Good luck to all the skaters! In the meantime, here's a new article about the competition: U.S. Olympic Short Track Speed Skating Trials previewNick Zaccardi / Jan 1, 2014, 3:09 PM EST olympictalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/01/u-s-olympic-short-track-speed-skating-trials-preview/

Here's Tony's link for the Unofficial Ladies' results - it looks like April Shin is the only skater who didn't make the cut. docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0AkKaRsNHioRqdHR3SjVUMThPU1NfTnBsVEpqM0s5M0E&f=true&noheader=false&gid=0There is one more group of men to skate. Travis Jayner fell in the straightaway at the beginning of his last lap. Not sure what happened. He requested, and was granted, a re-skate. So far, the big surprise is Kimberly Goetz, who recently switched to ice from inline, and has finished 5th in the 9LTT! She finished 2nd in AmCup 1 in November, her first senior level competition. WOW!

Here's Tony's link to the Men's results: docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0AkKaRsNHioRqdHR3SjVUMThPU1NfTnBsVEpqM0s5M0E&f=true&noheader=true&gid=35OMG - HEART ATTACK time for Travis. He qualified in the 16th & final spot for the men! When I said above that I don't know why he fell, it looked like in his re-skate that something may have been wrong with his blades. Not sure if it was what caused the earlier fall, or was the result of it - but it was clear he was having problems, slipping several times. He hung in there though - good job, Travis! And sadly, Robert Lawrence was so ill today that he had to 'scratch' and was not able to skate at all - hoping he's feeling better soon!

Both J.R. Celski and Chris Creveling posted 9LTT (1000M) times that were faster than Kwak Yoon-Gy's World Record 1000M time of 1:23.007 - racing in the pack is a whole different 'animal', but it's still blazin' fast!!!

Thanks for the updates Lori, I was watching Tony's spreadsheet for the times but it's nice to know what actually was happening, especially with Travis. I only saw the final results which really surprised me until I found out what happened. So glad he made it through. Here's a preview from NBC Olympics about the trials. It does a nice job simplifying the selection procedures and it looks at some of the contenders (although I think there are a few more). olympictalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/01/u-s-olympic-short-track-speed-skating-trials-preview/Also, Apolo Ohno will be commentating the trials on NBC as well as the short track events at the Olympics. I think it's an excellent choice, he'll make a great commentator. olympictalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/02/apolo-ohno-short-track-speedskating-olympic-trials-nbc-analyst/------------------------- J.R. Celski and Jessica Smith lead at Olympic Trials
J.R. Celski took the first strides to what he hopes is his second Olympic team on Thursday. Jessica Smith began her quest toward her first Games.
Celski and Smith swept the four- and nine-lap time trials at the U.S. Olympic Short Track Speed Skating Trials. That put both in the lead to secure Olympic berths in all three short track distances — 500m, 1000m and 1500m.
Celski, a two-time 2010 Olympic bronze medalist, won his events in 36.269 seconds and 1:21.67, respectively. The top five men were the same in both time trials — Celski, followed in order by potential first-time Olympians Chris Creveling, Eddy Alvarez and John-Henry Krueger and 2010 Olympian Jordan Malone.
Smith, an alternate for the 2010 Olympic team, won the women’s races in 39.317 and 1:28.11. The top three women were the same in both time trials — Smith, followed by potential first-time Olympian Emily Scott and 2010 Olympian Alyson Dudek.
The U.S. Olympic Trials continue with men’s and women’s 1500m races Friday at the Utah Olympic Oval (5:30 p.m. ET, 8-10 p.m. NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra).
The U.S. Olympic Team of up to five men and three women will be decided by standings systems combining the time trial results from Thursday with two 500m races, two 1000m races and two 1500m races. Skaters earn points based on their placements in time trials and races.
There will be three different standings for each distance plus an overall standing combing all distances. Each race has double the points of one time trial, which makes the time trial worth 20 percent overall. The four-lap time trial corresponds to the 500m, while the nine-lap time trial corresponds to the 1000m and 1500m.
Only the top points scorer over each distance is guaranteed to make the Olympic team.
Here are the individual distance standings after the time trials:
Men’s 500m 1. J.R. Celski — 500 2. Chris Creveling — 400 3. Eddy Alvarez — 320 4. John-Henry Krueger — 256 5. Jordan Malone — 205

Thanks, sk8erfan - this does make it a bit easier to understand. And the whole system is MUCH simpler than the 2010 selection labyrinth! Skaters’ four-lap time trial points are added to their points from two 500m races. Skaters’ nine-lap time trial points are added to their points from the 1000m and 1500m races for standings in those separate events. A time trial is worth 20 percent of a skater’s ranking per distance. Each result in a race is worth 40 percent.
The top-ranked skater in every distance will make the Olympic team. That could be one skater per gender (if he or she sweeps every distance), two skaters or three skaters (if a different skater wins each distance).
After that, if there are Olympic roster spots still available (there definitely will be for men), the second-ranked skater in every distance will make the Olympic team. If adding all of the second-ranked skaters exceeds the maximum Olympic roster size, priority would go to a skater who finished second in two of the three distances.
If that didn’t happen, the tiebreaker is a skater’s overall distance ranking, adding up points from both time trials and all three distances.
If there are Olympic roster spots still available after taking the top two skaters from every distance, the Olympic team will be filled by the top skaters remaining in the overall distance ranking.--------------------- On another subject, any of the links to Tony's spreadsheets that I posted upthread will give y'all the rankings thus far - both overall, and per distance. All you have to do is look in the header and click any of the blue links, i.e., Men's Overall, Women's Overall, Men's 9LTT, etc.! You can follow this spreadsheet throughout the weekend. --------------------- Tomorrow is the 1500M competition - warmups start at 4pm Mountain time. The NBCSN (NBC Sports Network) broadcast starts at 8pm Eastern time. I'll continue to update from the Oval with any fill-in-the-blanks info that I think would be of interest - and which isn't already covered by Tony's data!

Here's a best-kept secret for you.
Brian Westover has set up a direct-to-Web upload link so that as each round of each event is completed, the competitor stewards can upload that round's results directly for all to see. Go to this link and select the Olympic Trials from the drop down menu, and you'll be able to see the official results and times by skater almost, as well as overall points rankings after each distance.
