Thank you for this info, sk8erfan - and welcome to the board!
Oh my goodness - a quick look says it's gonna take a fresh mind to figure all this out, which I don't have at present, hehe!

Ride-share info:
I talked to Hampton Inn regarding taxi rate to the airport. Approx. cost is $30, according to 'front-desk'.
Sam and I need a ride-share TO the airport for Monday, late-morning... if anyone is interested. We have a rental car but we're letting our daughter and son take that back to the airport on Sunday noon-ish... they need to fly home Sunday afternoon.

We've been in Atlanta since the 17th, and it was difficult to check into BB for some reason... As you know, I'm driving. Not sure yet when I'll be heading back to L.A. Usually I come a couple of days early to spend time with my brother before the competition, then leave SLC at the crack of dawn on the Monday after. But because I want to be home on New Year's Eve, I may elect to stay AFTER the competition for my 'bro-time'. Larry & I need to sort that out and I'll let you know...

The link for purchasing tickets is posted upthread, but there is another option recently posted by USS - a package deal that includes hotel and tickets. The hotel is the Hilton Salt Lake City Center, and the room rate is $89 per night. It looks like each night that you stay, you also get 2 tickets for the next day's competition (purchased separately, they're $8 per ticket). I already have reservations at our usual hotel, the Hampton Inn West Jordan - about 2 miles from the Oval, which is a bonus if the weather is bad! Anyhow, this looks like a pretty sweet deal if you don't mind driving from downtown: www.hilton.com/en/hi/groups/personalized/S/SLCCCHH-USO-20131226/index.jhtml?WT.mc_id=POG

Hampton Inn's 'complimentary' breakfast is very substantial and their location is the most convenient!

The Hampton Inn is a little more expensive, but the price is pretty comparable between the two hotels if you add in the cost of breakfast at the Hilton. With the USS deal, you do save an additional $16 per day (for 2 people) on the tickets. But the Hampton location can't be beat, and the staff is always SO nice to us!

I'm still trying to swing doing this, but if I do, I'll be doing it on the cheap. I will probably be driving, which means I'll have my 4 wheel drive. Starting a new job today, so now I've got to beg for the time off. If there is anyone in the N. Cal/N. Nev. area that wants to hop a ride and/or share a motel room, let me know.

There is now a link for VIP tickets for Olympic Trials (many thanks to one of our members for a heads-up about this)! It's quite expensive, though - $150 per ticket per day, and it's not clear what extra perks the VIP tickets get you over and above the General Admission tickets. It's also not clear whether those of us who have already bought General Admission tickets can upgrade to VIP. My GA tickets say No Refund, No Exchange, though the return/exchange policy on the website simply says No Returns. However, if you're not 'blinking' at $150 per ticket per day, you can probably also afford to ditch the $8 ticket if they won't let you upgrade. The VIP tickets are being offered through the same agent, SmithsTix - the website says for more info you can call the Utah Olympic Oval (or I suppose you could also call SmithsTix). Here's the relevant info: Smith's Tix: (801) 467-8499 (800) 888-8499 Tickets: smithstix.com/events/sports/ice-skatingOR: squareup.com/market/utah-olympic-parkUtah Olympic Oval: (801) 968-6825 utaholympiclegacyfoundation.org/speed-skating-u-s-olympic-trials/Utah Olympic Park: (435) 658-4205 If anyone knows what you perks you get for the VIP tickets, let us know! In the past it has been some upgraded meals, a special section for seating (stadium-style with backs) and some swag. However, over the years the 'seating' part of the deal (which has actually been the greatest incentive to buy for the majority of us) has never quite worked out as planned. They have always eventually accommodated us, but I can't say that we've ever gotten the promised seating without seeking someone out and being a bit of a 'squeaky wheel'. Personally, I'm content with General Admission and I'm happy with $48 for the 3 days rather than $900 (as there are two of us)! I'm gonna stick with the tickets I've got. Also, the Utah Oval site has info about special events and start times each day:utaholympiclegacyfoundation.org/speed-skating-u-s-olympic-trials/Event Highlights 9 competition of days 32 Olympic Spots up for grabs Concerts + New Year’s Eve Celebration “Road to Sochi” USOC Interactive Fan Zone “Send off to Sochi” Olympic Team Naming (1/1 + 1/5) Televised coverage on NBC + NBC Sports Schedule Long Track Fri, Dec 27 > 3:30 to 8 pm (doors at 2:30 pm) | Mens 5000m + Ladies 3000m Sat, Dec 28 > 9:30 am to 2 pm (doors at 8:30 am) | Mens + Ladies 500m Sun, Dec 29 > 11:30 am to 2 pm (doors at 10:30 am) | Mens + Ladies 500m Tues, Dec 31 > 3 to 5 pm (doors at 2 pm) | Mens + Ladies 1500m Wed, Jan 1 > 1:30 to 5 pm (doors at 12:30 pm) | Mens 10,000m + Ladies 5000m Short Track

These last minute VIP ticket offers are par for the course for USS. Sounds like it will be another hot mess.
USS does need to make some VIP arrangements for the USOC officials, the NBC peeps, the Board, media, sponsors, and Apolo. I imagine that they would need some paying customers to offset the "freebies" going to this group. Doubt that they will be asking Mike Plant or Apolo to purchase VIP tickets!
I think we have all agreed about the unfortunate choice of dates for these Trials. The $150/day price tag is probably necessary to cover the inflated costs of catering during a peak holiday season. I live in Manhattan and I think a tray of hotdogs during the month of December would be $150! And that would be a small tray!

Actually, I feel a bit hypocritical in saying that the price is too steep - we've often said here that USS should charge a high enough price that peeps would feel that they're missing something special if they don't go. I still believe that 'free' (and even $8 for General Admission) is too low - but $150 per day for VIP??? Does anybody remember what the price was for the Marquette Oly Trials? To be fair, I'd love to see what people are getting for that $150 before I comment further - and in the meantime I'm using a sling to keep my jaw from dropping any further.

Lori, After calling the Oval yesterday afternoon and also a few time this morning, I finally got thru to someone there, who could answer my questions as to what is being offered for this VIP tix of $150! Basically, it's the same as what has been offered in the past for World Cup event. The seats are the ones with the backs and will most likely be along the center of east side; food is offered upstairs along with drinks (including alcohol). I said (to her) that this is basically what we were given for much less at past World Cup tix, and she agreed. Oly Trials is a big event... I know full well! Off the top of my head, I think Marquette tix were not more than $50/day. I'd have to dig back into 2009 receipts to know for sure, but I wouldn't have paid $150/day/per person back then... and I'll stick with my $8/GA tix this time!

Olympic Trials/TIX
$150/day for the standard WC VIP "perks" because it is the "Trials"? I don't think so.
Just illustrates the impenetrable bubble USS operates under and the poor marketing strategies. What bothers me is that the majority of the VIP TIX will be complementary - that plastic bracelet will be on the wrists of the usual "skating family" that shows up at these events. Some I agree with, a lot I don't. I doubt if there will be very many "paying" customers.
Trials is a big deal - yes and no. It is a big deal to the skaters and their families, and to the diehard fans. To the rest of the world - not such a big deal! They will wait for February and catch it on TV. I would like to see the actual number of people flying out on New Year's Day for Trials and spending $150 for seat backs and mediocre fare. Regardless of financial situations - people look for value in what they are spending for. I see no intrinsic value in the $150 price tag - unless there is a top chef preparing me their signature dish with the accompanying wines - and real dishes with silverware.
It should be more reasonably priced, regardless of "Trials". Of course, the loyal fans flying in were not a consideration.
Lori - we can take $150 and pay for our total bill at Stein Eriksen!
