Thanks, gasp, for the info! I've copied your post from the General ST Chat thread: www.usspeedskating.org/node/1065
ST & LT Oly Trials will be in January of 2014 at the Kearns Oval. See you there!
And don't fall over when you see the "big surprise" in the article! ---------------------- I'm also copying this post by osaycanusoc for further discussion: What happened to the idea of trying to hold the trials in a location that more accurately represented the altitude of the actual Olympics? Seems to me Sochi is at or near sea-level. If we want to win, would we not try to have trials in a situation as close as possible to the real thing? In Vancouver, many of Canada's big, strong power skaters got stuck in soft ice and denser air, something they didn't usually find in Calgary, and, in the end, smaller, lighter skaters ended up doing better than expected. Hope we don't suffer the results for choosing a team at a venue that won't replicate Sochi the best. I understand from a $$$ perspective, it may be more attractive to hold trials in SLC - USS will not have to pay to transport and house all those National Team athletes, and, Utah Oval may not have as much rink rental and public skate revenue to lose as other venues, plus they are subsidized by the UAF. Also, NBC may have had some say in this? Still, if it's all about the medals, when does it become worth it to go outside of Utah for trials?

Just booked my room! Who else is going?
Gasp, was NBC's broadcast the 'surprise' you were referring to? I do notice that it doesn't mention that it will be Live - I'm guessing that they will tape it and run it at a later date...
Osaycanusoc, was there discussion at some time about replicating the Sochi altitude? That's an interesting point.

I think that the limiting factor was the high tech safety pads at St. Lake.

I'll be retired and in Bend, Oregon next January....oh boy, I hope I can make this! It would be my first competition since the last Oly Trials in Marquette.

I think that the limiting factor was the high tech safety pads at St. Lake. Yeah, the Blood & Gore factor at the last Oly Trials was noteable, so I wouldn't doubt that the pads would be a consideration... I'll be retired and in Bend, Oregon next January....oh boy, I hope I can make this! It would be my first competition since the last Oly Trials in Marquette. So - sk8er, are you gonna be living in Bend? If so, color me jealous - if only for your proximity to Sisters, OR! BINGO, Lori! So who's planning the belated NYE party? TBD... ;D

On a completely selfish note, I'm just grateful I won't have to sell a kidney to afford the freaking airfare to the venue this time! Expensive podunk airport + horrifyingly bloody hack 'n slash + nasty local virus you just couldn't get rid of (yeah, remember that? I DO!!! I had it for MONTHS!) = I'll take SLC this time, Thank you very much. (smart a$$ aside, Marquette was a lovely area. But I'm happy for convenience and a lower price tag this time around.)

Info about this is posted elsewhere on the board, but of course it should be here, too! In reading the article, it says "13 hours of coverage". Those 13 hours will be divided between the Long Track & Short Track Trials, and because it also says, "with skaters securing a coveted spot on nearly every telecast", I think we can most certainly assume it won't be Live. I'm thinking (though I hope I'm wrong) that this won't bode well for Tony to get clearance to do his Live broadcasts(?) This probably means that our merry little band of hard-core fans will still be a bit disappointed - and we'll still need to go to SLC if we want complete, Live coverage. But with the loftier goal of 'growing the sport', NBC's edited highlights will surely suck new fans into it for the long haul - IMO, not a bad thing! The key will be to KEEP 'em!
