I moved Anthony's thread here from 'The Varsity' board...
Anthony didn't originally qualify to be on the National Team at the U.S. Championships in December, but he did skate on the Team in World Cups 5 & 6 (filling in for Apolo Ohno), so he rightly deserves to be included in 'The Starting Lineup' until the next qualifying event...
Anthony made a valuable contribution to the team, winning a Gold Medal in World Cup 5 (Bulgaria).

Favorites take different route to win American Cup Monday, March 16, 2009 By Mike Spencer mspencer@bc-times.com | 895-3541
MIDLAND - Anthony Lobello and Mary Grace ended the short track speedskating season with an exclamation point in the Dow American Cup Finals Sunday afternoon at the Midland Ice Arena.
Lobello didn't need to - the 2006 Olympian had already wrapped up first place and a spot on the U.S. Speedskating team before the start of the Super 1,500 meter finale.
''My main goal this weekend was not to get lazy and make sure that I was seeing all the elements that were coming together,'' said the 24-year-old Lobello, after completing the sweep in the Super 1,500 in 2:36.456 seconds. ''I'm pleased.
''It's goodbye to the 2008-09 season and it's onto the Olympic Trials.''
Grace, however, had to have a great finishing touch. She did not have a win in her first three events and the top ranking female American Cup Finals needed one to sew up her spot on the national team.
''I felt different in the Super 1,500,'' said Grace, who posted a winning time of 2:40.497. ''Something changed in me after the 1,000 and it was just complete focus.
''There was no strategy. I just skate best when I'm not thinking.''
Lobello could have mailed in his title request after winning his third straight race, the 1,000 (1:37.178) earlier in the day. The top ranking male in the American Cup Finals had also won the 1,500 on Friday night and the 500 on Saturday night.
''Anytime you get in a race there's always the possibility that something will happen so you always have to be prepared,'' said Lobello, who hails from Tallahassee, Fla. ''I tend to stay in the back so I can see everything that's going on and if I'm in front, I'm going to take charge.''
''Anthony is something else. He's so agile on his skates, he makes it look easy,'' said Midland's Barry Winslow, who finished 10th overall.
Winslow, who had been disqualified in two races including Sunday's 1,000 semifinal, was happy after closing with a second in the Super 1,500 B final (2:29.465). ''It's been a pretty controversial weekend to say the least,'' said Winslow, who was DQ'd Sunday for impeding when he fell just before the finish line. ''But I feel outstanding ... my legs feel good, the skates are good and the ice is good.
''I'm in the hunt. I just need to learn how to skate and how to maneuver around the pack better.''
Other top men finishers were Chris Creveling, second overall (2,408), Eddie Alvarez (1,987) and Kyle Uyehara (1,890). Midland's Kevin Reminder was 16th overall.
Alvarez, who finished second in the Super 1,500, would have been runnerup had it not been for a disqualification at the start of the 1,000 quarterfinals earlier in the day.
Until the big finale, all Grace had to show for her efforts were a second in the 1,500 on Friday and a fourth in the Sunday's 1,000. She also had a disqualification in the 500 on Saturday.
''This weekend was a disaster and this was the last race of the season and I just wanted to go out strong,'' Grace said.
So the 17-year-old Northbrook, Ill., native took the lead early in the 13.5-lap race and never gave it back. The win was worth a 1,000 points and gave her a 104-point win over Vicky Labourdette, who finished third in the Super 1,500 and totaled 2,720 points.
Cherise Wilkens, of Rochester, N.Y., finished third (2,538) and Kristin Biondo was next (2,496). Biondo, who had won the 1,500 and 1,000, was disqualified in the Super 1,500 semis.
Bay County Speedskaters Morgan Izykowski took ninth (916) and Rachel Skrocki (516) was 10th. Midland speedskater Kelsey Schiel was 15th (229).

Source: germancarscene.com/2009/05/15/volkswagen-announces-two-guest-drivers-for-jetta-tdi-cup-round-3-at-miller-motorsports-park/- - - - - - VOLKSWAGEN ANNOUNCES TWO GUEST DRIVERS FOR JETTA TDI CUP ROUND 3 AT MILLER MOTORSPORTS PARKPosted 15th May, 2009 in Volkswagen | Volkswagen of America, Inc. has announced two guest drivers for this weekend’s SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup events at Miller Motorsports Park on May 16 and 17. US Olympic speedskater, Anthony Lobello, and Miller Motorsports Park Director of Business Development, Bryan Miller will both participate to varying degrees in the series’ weekend on-track sessions and race. While Lobello has years of experience racing at high speeds on the ice, this weekend will mark his first time in a racecar on a motorsports circuit. As a result, he will receive on-track training in a Volkswagen Jetta TDI racecar from the Volkswagen driving instructors during a closed-course practice session on Friday evening at 6:15 pm MT. Lobello will also participate in Saturday’s practice session on the Miller circuit, which is a vast departure from his usual oval skating track. The goal will be to prepare Lobello to fully participate in another event later in the season. Miller is heading into this weekend’s race with previous racing experience and will fully participate in all of the weekend’s on and off-track events, including practice, qualifying and driver training sessions. He’ll then take the green flag alongside the series 25 full-time drivers on Sunday at 9:40 am MT. While Miller will be a full participant in the weekend’s events, he will be ineligible for points or prize money. Full-time series participants will move up the final race results accordingly. “We welcomed three guest drivers to participate in doubleheader weekend VIRginia International Raceway, and all of them walked away with a new appreciation for clean diesel technology and the level of competition that our series provides,” said Clark Campbell, motorsports manager, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “Our goal in each of our events is to spread the message that clean diesel provides benefits in both improved mileage and emissions, and this is a solution to automotive efficiency and environmental challenges that is readily available to consumers today. Engaging guest drivers from varying backgrounds allows us to further this effort.” About the guest drivers: Anthony Lobello – Lobello, 24, is a member of the US Speedskating team, which is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Tallahassee, Florida native competed in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy in the 500 meter short track event. He also is a very strong candidate to represent the US in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver where he is expected to be a medal contender. So far this year, Lobello has won a World Cup race and was named the 2009 American Cup Men’s Champion. For more information on Lobello, visit www.usspeedskating.org. Bryan Miller – Miller is the youngest son of the late Larry H. Miller and Miller Motorsports Park’s Director of Business Development. His involvement with the Park began with its inception, and his efforts have played a key role in the facility’s development and success. Since becoming involved with Miller Motorsports Park, he has discovered a love for motorsports, particularly motorcycling and road rallying which involves cross-continental adventure. A 2001 University of Utah graduate, Miller earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a second bachelor’s in Asian Studies. He served on the board of trustees of Larry H. Miller Charities from 2004-2007 and is currently a member of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies Governing Board and the board of the Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Foundation. The 2009 season marks the second year of competition for the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, which is sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing. During the season, young, up and coming drivers (between ages 16-26) will compete in 10 events on eight road courses around North America in identical factory-prepared clean diesel Jetta TDI’s powered by Syndiesel® B5 blended biodiesel. Each driver competing in the series will earn a Pro Racing license from SCCA at the conclusion of the season. In addition to the $50,000 prize money purse at stake during the season, the series champion will win $100,000. The Jetta TDI Cup car is powered by a 2.0-liter, 170 hp, four-cylinder TDI clean diesel engine mated to a six-speed, double-clutch, automatic DSG transmission. The car is only slightly modified from stock with Pirelli racing tires, race suspension and brake components, drivers racing safety seat, FIA roll cage and an on-board fire extinguisher system. Wow, BBB, that's really interesting - 'never too late to take up a new sport, eh? Hopefully there will be some follow-ups to this, especially when that 'other event later in the season' happens!

Olympic skater gets up to speed on a different track Notes » Lobello drives in on-track training at MMP By Steve Luhm
The Salt Lake Tribune
Updated: 05/16/2009 10:24:40 PM MDT
Anthony Lobello loves to race, which explains why he traded ice skates for a fire suit at Miller Motorsports Park.
A world-class short-track speedskater, Lobello is a member of the U.S. national team. He competed in the 2006 Olympics in Torino and hopes to return in 2010 at Vancouver.
This weekend, however, Lobello did something far removed from speed skating.
He accepted an invitation from Volkswagen to participate in on-track training with company instructors, who have been preparing cars for Sunday's Jetta TDI Cup -- a support race for the Utah Grand Prix.
"In school, I probably had 15 different classmates who had VWs," Lobello said. "So I've ridden around in enough of them to know they can do some cool stuff."
Lobello made his practice runs Friday and Saturday, with an eye on possibly driving in a Jetta TDI Cup race later this season.
If that happens, Lobello plans to win.
"Whenever you are competing against anyone at anything, I think it's obligatory to be totally committed," he said. "Whether I'm driving a race car or skating or on a pogo-stick, I want to be in front. I want to be first in line."

This photo was from last year's photo shoot by Brian Nicholson for USS, which went into USS's media guide and calendar. Amazing website and photos by Nicholson Photography: nicholsonphoto.com/index2.php?v=v2Apolo Anton Ohno, Anthony Lobello (what looks like Jeff Simon) and Travis Jayner Brain's caption from the photoshoot This is the US Men's Speed Skating team. In the lead is Apolo Anton Ohno who you may remember from 2002 Winter Olympics fame. I had a lot of fun shooting this assignment since the skaters were very comfortable with the camera and seem to have a great time hanging out with one another. Oh, and they are very serious about their skating. -BN Posted by Nick@Nite at 2:39 PM

Yet another treasure from the Mining Journal: USA Speedskating – Lobello Looks To Stand OutOn a team of stars like Apolo Anton Ohno and Shani Davis, Anthony Lobello is looking to distinguish himself By CURT KEMP Journal Sports Writer July 3, 2009 www.miningjournal.net/page/content.detail/id/529732.html?nav=5010Former USOEC skater Anthony Lobello’s helmet has become his trademark. Skating on Monday with the team, he had it on as usual. (Journal photo by Curt Kemp)Former United States Olympic Education Center speedskater Anthony Lobello makes his way around the ice at the Berry Events Center Monday in Marquette during the team’s training session. (Journal photo by Curt Kemp)MARQUETTE - In the sport of speedskating, it's difficult to stand out. Most teams wear the same full-body uniform, and the face is the only distinguishing aspect of the athletes. For the United States speedskaters, Apolo Anton Ohno has his distinguishing soul patch. Former United States Olympic Education Center resident athlete and current U.S. Speedskating Team member Anthony Lobello wears an orange helmet with tiger stripes. "It's how I race," Lobello explained. "Claws out. Fierce." On the right side of the helmet is the number 15 - Lobello's favorite number and his birthday (Aug. 15). His last name is on the back of the helmet. The former soccer player - Lobello briefly played striker on the Northern Michigan University club team - said his helmet is like a jersey; it helps him stand out. In Marquette, though, Lobello doesn't have many problems getting noticed. He spent three years at the USOEC, and those years have made him an honorary member of the community. During training camp in Marquette this past week, the Tallahassee, Fla., native said he was welcomed back with open arms. "I grew up in Florida, but I had some very very influential years of my life right here," he said. "I couldn't have had it any better. "The people in Marquette are true Americans. They are born and bred, the heart of the country. They know how to treat people," he added. "When I'm here, I feel like I'm home." For the 10 days of training Lobello dubbed "hell week, but 10 days and not just a week," he said it was good to be in such a comfortable environment. "I look up and I recognize pretty much everybody that's in the stands," Lobello said. "That's the best thing, because it's a small town feel." In September, he'll be back in Marquette for the Olympic Trials. It's an event the 2006 Olympian is certainly looking forward to. "When people are here watching us, it's like a completely different energy than any place else in the world," Lobello said. "This place is always so enthusiastic, and they welcome us to the town." That's an impressive statement considering Lobello's been to Germany, Japan, China, Bulgaria, Austria and Holland - all in the past year alone. "But, to this day, still the most packed stadium I've ever been in is this one," he said. After the Olympic Trials, the U.S. Short Track team will be preparing for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, which, with the recent success of U.S. skaters, could be its most successful Winter Games yet. Lobello said there are five skaters on the team currently that could come home with individual medals in Vancouver, and he's positive about the U.S.'s chances.
