Chris skated in the US Single-Distance Championships in Salt Lake City (Sept 27-30, 2012). I’ve been absolutely confident that Chris would break into the Big Leagues eventually, and he didn’t disappoint me! I’m so happy to announce that he was SECOND overall in USSDC’s and represented the USA admirably in the first 2 World Cups in Canada. More on that later, but here are his USSDC results: Milestones: Highest Overall Finish in a National Team selection competition; First-time selection to National Team! 2nd Overall 9-Lap Time Trial - 1st 4-Lap Time Trial - 1st 1500M(1) – 1st (B Final) 500M(1) - Penalty (A Final) 1000M(1) – 4th (A Final) 1500M(2) - Did Not Finish (Semifinal) 500M(2) – 4th (A Final) 1000M(2) – 2nd (A Final) Chris (#489) in the lead at USSDC in Salt Lake City. Chris skated in World Cups 1 & 2 (in Calgary & Montreal, respectively), helping the team win the BRONZE MEDAL in the Montreal men’s relay. Chris had an impressive outing in his very first World Cups, making it into the B Final in both of his distances in Calgary and the quarterfinals in both of his distances in Montreal - not a single repechage for Chris in either of the 2 World Cups! Here are his results: Milestones: First time competing in World Cup competition; first World Cup medal (bronze, men’s relay). World Cup 1 (Calgary - Oct 19-21, 2012): 1000M(1) - Not Entered 1500M – Prelims (3rd-qualified); Heats (3rd); Semis (3rd); B Final (5th) 500M - Not Entered 1000M(2) - Prelims (1st); Heats (2nd); Quarterfinals (2nd); Semis (3rd); B Final (2nd) 5000M Relay – Chris skated in the Heats and Semifinals of the men’s relay. Unfortunately, Chris ‘didn’t look both ways before crossing the street’ when coming in to tag up with Kyle Carr (who had fallen) - the team incurred a penalty in the Semifinals and did not advance. World Cup 2 (Montreal - Oct 26-28, 2012): 500M(1) - Prelims (2nd); Heats (2nd); Quarterfinals (Penalty) 1500M - Not Entered 500M(2) - Not Entered 1000M - Prelims (1st); Heats (2nd); Quarterfinals (4th) 5000M Relay - Chris skated in all legs of the relay, helping the team win the BRONZE MEDAL in the A Final! Chris skated at World Cup 3 in Nagoya, Japan (Nov 30-Dec 2). Here are his results: 1500M(1) - Not Entered 1000M - Prelims (1st); Heats (Penalty) 500M - Not Entered 1500M(2) - Prelims (1st); Heats (3rd); Semis (4th); Final B (6th) 5000M Relay - Chris skated in the Men’s Relay Heats, but the team got a Penalty and did not advance. Chris has skated in 3 World Cups, and 6 individual distances - knock on wood, but he has yet to skate a Repechage - and he made it to his third B Final! I couldn’t find a pic of Chris in this competition, but ISU has posted an album of great pics from Nagoya at the following link: www.facebook.com/pages/Short-Track-Speedskating/71860307108#!/media/set/?set=a.341539219276918.74324.145517225545786&type=3

From USS' skateleft.com blog, here's some background about Chris - and he also talks about what it was like to make his first World Cup team: Athlete Spotlight: Chris CrevelingDecember 11, 2012 skateleft.com/2012/12/11/athlete-spotlight-chris-creveling/+++ Relative newcomer Chris Creveling accomplished a lot as an inline athlete. Having started inline when he was only seven, he was a Jr World, National and World Champion and now he has his sights set on making the Short Track Olympic team for Sochi. Creveling, a native of Kitnersville, PA, switched to ice in 2007. He started skating with the WHiP team under then-coach Derek Parra. “My friends on the world inline team had already switched and we were all very competitive,” said Creveling. “And I thought it would be a good idea for me since I had accomplished a lot in inline. So I moved to Salt Lake to pursue it.” His original intention was to compete in long track. But during training in his first summer on the ice, Coach Parra suggested he try short track. So he started skating short track AmCups and hasn’t looked back. This season, Creveling made his first World Cup team. “My first World Cup for speedskating was completely different than I expected,” said Creveling. “Inline was a marathon—it was one race and wasn’t as exciting. Short Track gets more and more exciting as the heats and races progress. I was more used to each race being a final. So Calgary (his first World Cup) was a big jump in experience. You have to be ready to go for every race and treat it like a final.” Although he doesn’t have a lot of free time, Creveling does find time for a few other hobbies. He likes bike riding and he likes to snowboard—but is quick to say his coaches don’t like him boarding. He also tries to find time to hike and camp. “This season, I’m looking forward to the World Cup in Sochi. To get to see the atmosphere and get a preview of the Olympic venue is exciting.”[/img]
