J.R. Celski says World Cup speedskating loss is Olympic lessonBy Brian T. Smith / The Salt Lake Tribune / October 23, 2011 Kearns • J.R. Celski made a final push, moving from fourth and last place into third, then attempting to squeeze through the middle of a tight pack and steal first. His path was blocked by Korea's Jinkyu Noh, though. And by the time Celski had skated across the finish line Saturday during the first short-track speedskating World Cup race of the season at the Utah Olympic Oval, he'd not only lost his grasp on a silver medal in the men's 1,000-meter final, but been penalized for impeding while making his last-second sprint. Rather than give into post-race frustration or anger, the United States' two-time bronze winner at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics was smiling. Celski is in the initial stage of a three-year journey that he hopes will end up in Sochi, Russia, for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Every setback is a lesson. And Saturday's un-Olympic-like glide around the track should stick in his mind for a while. Read the entire article: www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/52762658-75/celski-cup-bronze-1000.html.cspTags: J.R. Celski / Short Track Speedskating +++ "It was a good experience," Celski said. "It was my first meet back from a year and a half. My goal is not to win at World Cup One in my first meet back. It's a slow, steady pace and a climb to where I want to be. And hopefully I'll get there by the end of this year." Less than an hour after his 1,000-meter failure, Celski was back on the ice. He anchored the USA's 5,000 relay team in a semifinal race, guiding the squad to second and a spot in Sunday's finals. "It's a crazy cycle," Celski said. Alyson Dudek is in the early portion of her own cycle. She collected a bronze medal Saturday in the women's 1,000 with a time of 1 minute, 31.494 seconds, finishing just behind teammate Lana Gehring (1:31.278). Dudek was part of the USA's bronze medal-winning 3,000 relay team 2010 in Vancouver. She's slowly making self-improvements to return to Olympic form, while eyeing the 2012 World Championships in Shanghai, China, as a platform to display her prowess in the 500. "Having the first World Cup of the season here in our country at our rink - where we train every single day - and having a crowd that's cheering for us all, it's really amazing and I think we're off to a really good start," Dudek said. Utahn Katherine Reutter took gold in the 1,500 with a time of 2:24.433. World Cup finals will be held Sunday in the men's and women's 500, 1,500 and relays. The races will be webcast at isu.org.[/img]

J.R. returned to competition after taking a well-deserved post-Olympics year off. He made the A Final in each of his two races, but was disappointed by a Penalty in the 1000M Final. He made up for it with a bronze-medal-winning performance in the 1500M(2) Final against 2 Korean skaters who stymied every attempt to pass. Here are his results: CELSKI, J.R. 1500M(1) – Not Entered 1000M – MADE IT TO FINAL; Prelims (1st); Heats (1st); QF (1st); SF (1st); Final A (PEN) 500M - Not entered 1500M(2) – BRONZE MEDAL; Heats (1st); SF (1st); Final A (3rd) 5000M Relay (4th) - MADE IT TO FINAL; J.R. skated in the Heats, Semifinals, and the A Final. J.R. was the push-off guy for newcomer John-Henry Krueger, and IMO this is an excellent combo! ------------------------- Photo Credit: Bella Faccie Sports Media / Thomas Di Nardo The above photo is used pursuant to an agreement for image use with BFSM, and must not be reposted elsewhere without permission from BFSM. www.bellafaccie.com/Photos from BFSM can be purchased, and a portion of the proceeds go to USS. "Stymied"? So that's what they call it now! LOL Well... umm... I had to think of 'something', 'cause Team-Skating is apparently no longer in the vernacular, haha!

...and Team Skating is never called. So if being a "stymier" is the only way your teammates can win--why get on the ice? The Koreans as individual skaters are better than that. How sweet can victory be, if it is being manipulated? Shame on the ISU and their refs.
Shame, Shame, Shame (Gomer Pyle, USMC/TV)!

It's apparently not an infraction now - so our team will need to develop strategies against it. It is what it is, eh?

2011-2012 World Cup 3 - Nagoya, Japan (Dec 2-4, 2011) J.R. Celski won the silver medal in the men 1000m(1) final. L to R: J.R. Celski (USA-silver); KWAK Yoon-Gy (KOR-gold); SEO Yi Ra (KOR-bronze) J.R. Celski (Federal Way, WA) was in a close race in today’s 1000m (1) final, finishing second, posting 1:29.828, behind current World Cup 1000m leader Yoon-Gy Kwak (KOR) with a time of 1:29.743. Korea’s Yi Ra Seo was third (1:29.899) and Canada’s Olivier Jean finished fourth (1:30.090). This is Celski’s second medal of the 2011-12 World Cup season. "I felt really good in that race. I knew I had some tough competition with the two Korean skaters and the Canadian. I knew it was going to be a game of tactics, so I stayed towards the front and Yoon-Gy got in front of me and just outskated me and outraced me. I’m really happy with how I did and I’m looking forward to skating tomorrow," said Celski.

Here are J.R.'s results from World Cup 3, Nagoya, Japan (Dec 2-4, 2011). After winning the silver medal in Saturday's 1000M(1), J.R. was injured in a 3-skater tangle in the 1000M(2) Quarterfinal. Reports are that he has a sprained ankle, and we haven't heard what his status is for this weekend's World Cup 4.
1500M – Not Entered 1000M(1) – SILVER MEDAL; Prelims (1st); Heats (1st); QF (1st); SF (1st); Final A (2nd) 500M - Not entered 1000M(2) – Prelims (1st); Heats (1st); QF (Penalty – race stopped/restarted due to an injury to J.R.) 5000M Relay - J.R. competed in the Heats (1st), and Semifinals (2nd) of the relay, helping the team get to the A Final. As most of you know, J.R. didn't skate at World Cup 4 because of a sprained ankle sustained the previous weekend at World Cup 3 in Nagoya, Japan.
