Denton's Malone to skate relay semifinal tonight Kate Hairopoulos/Reporter / Wed, Feb 17, 2010 Short-track speedskater Jordan Malone returns to the ice tonight to compete with his U.S. teammates in the 5,000-meter relay vs. No. 1-ranked Korea. The U.S. is expected to challenge for a medal in this event. Malone debuted here on Saturday, but was disqualified in his first 1,500-meter heat. Malone skates with Vancouver medalists Apolo Anton Ohno (heard of him?), J.R.Celski and remaining teammates Simon Cho and Travis Jayner. The relay is a crazy thing to watch, with all the skaters on the ice at the same time. They don't hand off batons, but they physically shove their teammates from behind to get them going on their laps. Ohno, Jayner and Celski will also skate in the 1,000-meter heats. Over at long-track speedskating tonight, Shani Davis returns for the 1,000 meters, his golden event in Turin in 2006. Oh, yeah, and Shaun White competes in the snowboard halfpipe. Wonder if we'll see the McTwist 1260 or be surprised by something else he cooked up. (Photo by Gerry McCarthy/DMN)

via NBC local coverage website:
Ten things to know about Jordan Malone
In 2006, short-tracker Jordan Malone snapped off a piece of bone in his ankle during a bad fall, causing him to miss the 2006 Olympics. The good news is that was then and this is now. Malone is ready to charge in Vancouver, and here's how he's doing it:
Mantra running through his mind: "This is my chance to represent where I'm from, on the biggest stage of all."
Unorthodox training method: "I do off-skates training with my puppy on my back-just kidding."
How to stave off nervous energy before competing: "I'll tell you when I find out. [Insert laugh]. Just remember what I've gone through."
Top five artists queued up on the iPod before the first event: John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Foo Fighters, Chamillionaire, and Jonathan Tyler
Fuel: "Loose leaf tea from Teavana"
Distractions between Olympic events: "I'll do everything I've been putting off. Then I'll be killing to get back on the rink."
What he's given up until the Olympics are over: "Celebrating"
Post-Olympics R&R: "I'm going on a cruise to the Cayman Islands."
Post-Olympic indulgence: "EVERYTHING... especially Coca-cola."
Most inspiring Olympian: "Apolo Ohno".

Thanks, Wildfire - nice article! ;D Here's a little something that came in today: TTUISD Graduate Skates His Way to the Olympics By John Davis / February 22, 2010 today.ttu.edu/2010/02/ttuisd-graduate-skates-his-way-to-the-olympics/When Olympic speed skater Jordan Malone competes as part of the men’s 5,000-meter relay team on Feb. 26, it may be the last time he participates with skating legend Apolo Ohno, who may end his career with this competition. Though Malone did not compete in the semifinals on Feb. 17, the former Texas Tech University Independent School District (TTUISD) student still has a chance to win a gold medal. Malone, a native of Denton, makes his Olympic debut in Vancouver this year, beginning with short track after a hugely successful inline skating career. Named the Fastest Man in the World for inline speed skating in 2003, he has since made the switch to ice speed skating, competing in the past five world championships and earning top-10 rankings overall in world competitions. Malone said watching former inline skater Ohno compete as an ice skater in the 2002 Winter Olympics inspired the change, though he decided to achieve all he could with inline before making the switch. “Imagine what that’s like as an inliner (to watch Ohno),” Malone said. “It’s like, ‘He came from inline. Why can’t I?’” His life has taken him around the world to more than 154 different cities in 18 different countries on four different continents. Constant competition made attending a typical high school out of the question. To receive his high school degree, Malone said he chose to attend TTUISD after hearing about it from some friends. The distance-education program within the University College of Texas Tech University offered Malone the flexibility and convenience he needed as a full-time athlete and student. He graduated in November 2008. Established in 1993, TTUISD has a total enrollment of 77,887 students who come from various locations and backgrounds. The programs serve students from kindergarten through the 12th grade who are home-schooled, part of military or missionary families or are non-traditional students. The school district is the only accredited distance-learning, kindergarten-through-12th grade diploma program in Texas. It offers a rigorous high school curriculum through a combination of print-based and electronic courses. During 2008-2009, TTUISD reached a record enrollment number of 1,802 full-time students. Alumni include former Miss Texas Morgan Matlock; Sarah LeMaire, who plays Sarah Moody on “The Wannabes Starring Savvy;” “Friday Night Lights” star Jesse Plemons; and Hunter Parrish, seen on the Showtime series “Weeds” and featured in the Hilary Swank movie “Freedom Writers.” Though he has put his education on hold, Malone plans to go to college and get an engineering degree. When he is not practicing, Malone runs his own business out of his garage under the name Full Composite Racing (FCR), where he manufactures carbon fiber protective racing equipment for 80 percent of the Short Track National Team. “It is a fun hobby to have on the side,” he said. “It’s a self-taught, independent venture and I’m working with some pretty impressive aerospace materials. This is part of my road to becoming an engineer after skating.” Stephanie Schettek and Anna Woodlock contributed to this report.

My favorite quote from this article: "I wear Spandex once a day for 20 years. You don't think I want some medals to show for it?"Olympian Brings Medal Home to N Texas By OMAR VILLAFRANCA / Sun, Mar 7, 2010 / NBC DFW Photo Credit: Getty ImagesJordan Malone's first pair of shoes were a good omen of his Olympic fortunes. "Little Navy blue, cloth baby shoes with Olympic rings on them," said Peggy Aitken, Malone's mother. She bought them when her son was born in 1984, the same year as the Los Angeles Olympic Games. A few years later, Malone started racing on in-line skates in the empty parking lot of a Denton hospital. For the rest of the story, see: www.nbcdfw.com/news/sports/Olympian-Brings-Medal-Home-to-N-Texas-86736817.html+++ Twenty years after skating as fast as he could on asphalt, Malone is a bronze medal winner for the men's US Olympic Team. "I'm still this small time kid from Denton, Texas," Malone said. He greeted 70 to 100 friends, fans and well wishers at Denton's Pour House on Saturday. Many of them came to get autographs, pose for pictures and see Malone's bronze medal. Malone admits, his still hasn't fully realized the magnitude of his Olympic adventure. "People ask, 'Did you go to the Olympics?' 'Oh, do you have any medals? Any hardware?' I get to say, 'Yes!' You know, that's the coolest thing in the world," Malone said. ""I wear Spandex once a day for 20 years. You don't think I want some medals to show for it?" Malone joked. Malone also took time to thank Denton children in attendance. Many that showed up had written him good luck cards from his former school, McNair Elementary in Denton. "To have my elementary school look up to me, that's huge. That's huge." Malone said. Fans couldn't stop touching and picking up the skates Malone brought with him. They're the same pair that helped the US men's team win the bronze in the 5000 meter relay. Malone also brought along a glove with carbon fiber tips used in the games. He said the tips help racer's hands glide over the ice when making their turns on the short track. Malone said he made the gloves himself with the carbon fiber in his garage. In fact, the 25 year-old said every member of the men's speed skating team, including superstar Apolo Ohno, wore the handmade gloves during their races. Malone's mom, Peggy Aitken, said that her son is also a big businessman. But before he takes up a second career, Malone said he's not done with speed skating and admits that he's looking forward to the 2014 winter games in Russia. ""I have a bronze medal and I'm happy. But I'm not satisfied." Malone said.[/img]

www.csdecisions.com/article/9142/freal-foods-celebrates-speed-skater.htmlF’real Foods Celebrates Speed SkaterJordan Malone shares milkshakes in Vancouver. By CSD Staff / March 11, 2010 Milkshake and smoothie company, f'real foods, had plenty to cheer about at the 2010 Olympics. The company sponsored its first athlete, speed skater Jordan Malone, and cheered him on as he won a bronze medal in the men's 5000 meter relay. Malone had a f'real blender with him in Vancouver, and shared the company's milkshakes, frozen cappuccinos and fruit smoothies with fellow Olympic athletes. "We definitely had the Olympic spirit here in the office," said Jim Farrell, founder of f'real foods. "And we were thrilled to see the photos of Jordan drinking and sharing our products in Vancouver. It's been a pleasure to sponsor such a dedicated and talented athlete, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with him in the future," he added. Jordan Malone hails from Denton, Texas and is the only short track skater in the U.S. to compete in all of the past five World Championship events, winning the silver medal in the 2009-2010 World Cup 1000 meter event. Malone and fellow teammates Apolo Ohno, J.R. Celski, Travis Jayner and Simon Cho earned the bronze medal in the men's 5000 meter relay with a frenzied push in the final lap to pass China and secure their third place finish. The company markets freshly blended real ice cream milkshakes, real fruit smoothies and gourmet frozen cappuccinos through retailers throughout the U.S. Using their "right-in-the-serving-cup" blending technology, f'real enables retailers to offer all of f'real's premium-quality frozen blended beverages freshly blended from one automated blending system that is so simple and safe, it can even be placed in self-serve applications. The full line of freshly-blended f'real products is available in more than 4,500 retail locations in 48 states across the U.S.

This article's a few weeks old, but it's a goodie! Olympics: Malone still celebratingBy Todd Jorgenson / Sports Editor / Denton Record-Chronicle / Feb 27, 2010 VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Jordan Malone and his teammates on the United States short track speed skating team were primed for a celebration.
They capped their Olympics with a bronze medal in the men’s 5,000-meter relay on Friday night at Pacific Coliseum, polishing off the best Olympic performance ever by an American short track team with six medals, including four on the men’s side.
Malone, the 25-year-old Denton native, won his first medal in his Olympic debut. Ditto for teammates Travis Jayner and Simon Cho, while Apolo Anton Ohno and J.R. Celski had won individual medals earlier in Vancouver.
After the grand finale, they were due for some kind of elaborate party or gourmet celebration dinner, right?
“We all got a chance to go to McDonald’s,” Malone said Saturday. “We had a victory meal. I know McDonald’s doesn’t sound like a whole lot, but when it’s staring you down every time you’re in the cafeteria, and you’re not able to eat it because it’s not part of your diet, then a Quarter Pounder is so sweet.”For the rest of the story: www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/drc/sports/stories/DRC_Malone_022810.15e2691cc.html+++ The medal earned a measure of redemption for Malone after disappointing finishes in his two individual races in Vancouver. He was disqualified in his preliminary heat in the 1,500 meters and crashed in his first-round heat in the 500. Malone said he was motivated by all of the support and well-wishes he received from his fans in Denton, who staged watching parties and sent him encouraging messages leading up to each of his races. “I had all this support from Denton and Dallas and Texas in general. Now I’m coming home with something around my neck,” he said. “I was taking video of the flame earlier, and I realized the Olympic flame means so much more when you have real estate in it.” Malone said earning a team medal was especially rewarding for each of the teammates, who train together most of the year in Salt Lake City. “We race individually 90 percent of the time, but we train as a team,” Malone said. “We get the one opportunity to actually compete solely for the USA and solely as a team and as brothers. We’ve been so close, and we’ve put everything on the line for each other. We’ve done it for ourselves, but in this situation it’s for each other. To be able to share everything -- victory and defeat -- being on the podium was the most special thing.” Canada won the gold medal in the relay and South Korea took the silver. The U.S. sat in fourth place for much of the 45-lap race, but Ohno made a late pass of the Chinese team to get the Americans into bronze medal position. “The last half of the race, I couldn’t even hear myself think, because Canada was in front and the whole crowd was going bonkers,” Malone said. “It was so loud. That was an epic feeling.” The relay medal was the eighth medal for Ohno, adding to his tally as the most decorated American athlete in Winter Olympics history. He has won bronze in the relay in each of the last two Olympics, something he said adds extra meaning. “I think if I had a choice to win a medal by myself or together as a team, I would choose the team medal over the individual glory,” Ohno said. “To share this with these guys, after spending these past months together focusing in on this, would be my first choice.” As for his plans, Malone intends to continue competing in short track, with hopes of earning a spot on the U.S. team for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. In the more immediate future, he and his teammates (except Ohno) will end their season at the ISU World Championships in three weeks in Sofia, Bulgaria. But prior to that will be a short breather to exhale and take in their achievements. “We’re relaxed. The stress is off,” Malone said. “We’re coming home with hardware.” [/img]
