Lana Gehring won the 1,000- and 1,500-meter races Sunday to sweep all four events in the two-day American Cup short track speed skating championship.
Gehring, of Glenview, Ill., won the 1,000 in 1-minute, 35.323-seconds and the 1,500 for the second time in 2:35.446 at the Pettit National Ice Center.
"That was my goal but you never know in speedskating," Gehring said. "It's better than in previous years. It's nice to know that the hard work all summer is paying off. But I'm young (20) I still have lots to improve."
Gehring won the 500 and the 1,500 on Saturday.
"The big difference is in her mental approach, she is much stronger now," U.S. national team coach Joe Su Chun said. "It is not just physical strength you need but mental strength to be great."
Gehring beat Katherine Reutter, of Champaign, Ill., by .01 seconds in the 1,500. Ruetter, who won silver in the 1,000 and bronze in the 3,000 relay at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, finished second in the 1,500 for the second straight day.
Kyle Carr, of Atlanta, won the men's 1,000 in 1:29.178 while Jeffrey Simon, of Kingwood, Texas, and Travis Jayner, of Midland, Mich., tied in the 1,500 at 2:31.955. Jayner won bronze in the relays at Vancouver.
Carr sprinted to an early lead after four laps in the 1,000 and then had to outmaneuver other skaters for five laps to stay in front.
"Somebody was going to move out first and I wanted it to be me," he said. "But I had to skate differently in some turns so no one could pass me."
Gehring's perfect weekend gave her 4,000 points to lead women skaters in qualifying for World Cup competition while Jayner's 3,340 topped male competitors. Skaters with the five highest totals made the teams.
Joining Gehring were Alyson Dudek, of Hales Corners, Wis.; Reutter; Jessica Smith, of Melvindale, Mich.; and Emily Scott of Boynton Beach, Fla. The four other male qualifiers were Simon; Carr; Simon Cho, of Arlington County, Va.; and Anthony Lobello, of Tallahassee, Fla.
For the first time, team coaches were allowed to choose one more skater for each squad. Chun said coaches and officials decided to choose more than one skater to compete in the three upcoming World Cup competitions. Morgan Izykowski, of Bay City, Mich., and Robert Lawrence, of Gafney, S.C., will join the team for the first two competitions. For the third event, Sarah Chen, of San Marino, Calif., and Kyle Uyehara, of Lakewood, Calif., will be on the team.
"It's an experiment we are trying to see if we can make the team stronger," Chun said.
The competition was marred by a horrific crash when Elizabeth Looby and Katherine Ralston fell and slid into the wall during a 1,000-meter final. Looby, of Pittsford, N.Y., and Ralston, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., were rushed to Froedert Hospital after the accident. They were later listed in stable condition, Looby with a cut to her thigh that bled profusely and Ralston with a minor neck injury.

Olympian Lana Gehring of Glenview swept all four races over the weekend to lead the qualifiers for the U.S. short track speedskating team that will compete in the World Cup this fall.
Gehring, a relay bronze medalist at the 2010 Winter Olympics, won the 500, 1,000 and two 1,500-meter races in the trials meet at Pettit Center in Milwaukee.
She upset Champaign's Katherine Reutter in the 1,000 and 1,500, the races where Reutter had been the top U.S. finisher -- including a silver medal at 1,000 -- in Vancouver.
Reutter also made the team for the World Cup, which begins with the Montreal meet Oct. 22-25.[/img]
