Jayner placed third overall in the competition and earned a berth on the five-man U.S. short-track national team. The third-place finish also makes Jayner eligible to skate all individual distances at the ISU short-track world championships March 11-13 in Sheffield, Great Britain. This is the first year Jayner has qualified to skate the individual distances at the world championships. To add to my post above, here’s a really great (and long) article from today’s Times & Transcript: Jayner not caught up in Olympic letdownRiverview native's road back to 2014 Olympics off to fabulous start By Sean Hatchard / Times & Transcript / January 1st, 2011 Riverview native Travis Jayner of the United States skates to a first-place finish in his heat of the men's 1,500-metre semi-final event at the short track Speed Skating ISU World Cup in Montreal in November of 2009. (File Photo) Travis Jayner sure isn't experiencing an Olympic letdown. One season after the Riverview short-track speed skater won a bronze medal in the men's 5,000-metre relay at the Vancouver Olympics, Jayner is showing no signs of slowing down. Now in his sixth season on the United States' World Cup team, Jayner has won six medals - three individually and three in the relay - during this World Cup season. Jayner, a dual Canadian-American citizen who learned his trade as a child at the Riverview Speed Skating Club, also placed third overall at the United States short-track championships two weeks ago. Jayner's road back to the Olympics, 2014 in Sochi, Russia, is off to a strong start. Read More: timestranscript.canadaeast.com/sports/article/1366876+++ Tags: Travis Jayner / Apolo Anton Ohno / Short Track Speedskating "I was really proud of what I accomplished last year, without question. As training restarted this year, I definitely had some moments, not of panic, but of, 'Am I really embarking on this long journey again ,'" Jayner, 28, said last week while home in Riverview for a brief Christmas visit with his family. "I came so close to making the 2006 Olympic team, I rededicated all my focus on making it to Vancouver and it takes a lot of energy to start all over again." What has Jayner feeling very good these days is the progress he's made in individual events. He's won a pair of silver medals in the 1,000- and 1,500-metre distances in World Cup events and his third overall showing at the U.S. championships qualified him for all three distances at the world short-track championships March 11-13 in Sheffield, England. "I'm really excited with the first half of the season and I think the results speak for themselves. The results I'm getting now are where I want to be. I want to be on top of the podium at the world championships and consistently wins medals at World Cups. That's a dream of mine," said Jayner, who was in second place before hitting a block with his skate on the final turn of his 1,000-metre heat - his lone individual event at the Vancouver Olympics - and lost his balance, finishing third and failing to advance to the quarter-finals. "To do this in a year after the Olympics, where there traditionally can be a huge letdown and where you have seen former speed skaters take a year off, I told myself I want to push harder this year and try to be better than ever before." Jayner began the season by capturing the overall men's points championship at the American Cup I in Milwaukee, Wis., a meet which featured a field of 75 top skaters, including many 2010 Olympic medallists. He opened the World Cup season with a bang, bagging three medals in Montreal, adding two more in Quebec City and another in Changchun, China. He then placed third overall at the U.S. championships in Utah two weeks ago. "I think a lot of it has to do with experience and confidence. I think I've been lucky to have been able to watch (American superstar) Apolo Anton Ohno the last few seasons and see what he brings to each and every race," said Jayner, who trains with the U.S. national team in Salt Lake City, Utah. "Now, I'm one of the veterans on our team and I try to lead by example and at the same time, try to pick up where Apolo left off. His shoes are impossible to fill because he's done so much in this sport, but I guess I'm one of the leaders on the team now." Jayner will conclude the World Cup season Feb. 11-13 in Moscow, Russia and Feb. 18-20 in Dresden, Germany before preparing for the world championships in March. Jayner helped the Americans win a silver medal in the relay and finished 11th in the overall rankings at last year's world championships. He also won bronze in the relay at the 2007 event. "There's always room for improvement and I'm not at the level I want to be at yet. I'm still learning to race. You're always trying to make sure your final race is your best race. You don't want to dwindle in the semifinals," he said. "So far, I've done what I've wanted to do this season. I wanted to be a threat in all distances on the World Cup. I think I've shown I'm one of the most consistent skaters right now and with the world championships coming up, I would like to prove it on a bigger stage."[/img]

Often the officials will re-start the race - but on this occasion, the Korean skater incurred a penalty and Travis won the bronze medal. Short-Track-Weltcup in Dresden - 500m Männer A-FinaleAnd finally, an article from Travis’ hometown newspaper: Jayner wraps up World Cup season with medal Riverview speed skater will compete at world championships next month Times & Transcript / February 21, 2011 DRESDEN, Germany - Riverview native Travis Jayner completed his best career ISU World Cup short-track speed skating season with a bronze medal in the 500 metres in the final meet of the season here Saturday. Jayner, a dual Canadian-American citizen and a member of the United States' World Cup team, finished third in the 500 metre final in 42.834, behind winner Thibaut Fauconnet of France (41.392) and runner-up Simon Cho of the U.S. (41.406). Jayner claimed the bronze medal in his only 500 metre event on this season's international circuit. In yesterday's 1,000 metre quarter-final, Jayner and the other three skaters all fell during the race, but got up and continued, with Jayner finishing third and not advancing to semifinals. Jayner finished the World Cup season with nine medals - six individually and three in the 5,000 metre relay. At the conclusion of yesterday's races, the ISU awarded prizes to the top 10 ranked skaters for each distance in the season's six World Cups competitions. Jayner, who is seventh in the overall rankings, was third in the 1,000 metre distance and 10th in the 1,500 metres. His bronze medal Saturday earned him a 23rd world ranking in the 500 metres for the season. Jayner will now prepare for the world short-track championships March 11-13 in Sheffield, England. He has qualified to race in the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 metre distances and in the 5,000 metre relay with his U.S. teammates. The U.S. relay team did not advance out of the quarter-finals in Dresden on the weekend, but its fourth-place world ranking qualifies it to skate at the world championships. The 2010-11 season concludes with the world short-track team championships March 19-20 in Warsaw, Poland. Meanwhile, Marianne St-Gelais of St-Felicien, Que., led a Canadian medal rush yesterday in Dresden with a gold in the women's 500 metres. She won her fifth World Cup race at the distance to clinch the overall season title. She set a Canadian record yesterday, stopping the clock in 43.091 seconds. St-Gelais' gold was one of five medals on the day for Canada. Guillaume Bastille of Riviere-du-Loup, Que., earned a silver in the men's 1,000 metres and Marie-Eve Drolet of Laterriere, Que., bronze in the women's 1,000, while the country's relay teams picked up bronze medals as well.[/img] Read More: timestranscript.canadaeast.com/sports/article/1381998Tags: Travis Jayner / Short Track Speedskating +++

Lots of nice 'Travis quotes' in this one! Jayner Heads to Worlds Riverview speed skater will compete on sport's largest stage this weekend By Sean Hatchard / Times & Transcript Staff / March 10, 2011 Travis Jayner was one of the most consistent performers during the World Cup short-track speed skating season this winter. Now, he's out to prove he can shine on the sport's largest stage. Jayner, a Riverview native who won six individual medals on the World Cup circuit this season, skates at the world short-track championships, which begin tomorrow in Sheffield, England. Jayner, a dual Canadian-American citizen who has competed for the United States for the past six years, will skate in four distances in Sheffield - 500 metres, 1,000 metres, 1,500 metres and 3,000 metre super final. The 28-year-old is also expected to skate on the American men's 5,000 metre relay team. Jayner won a bronze medal in the relay for the U.S. at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, but he's enjoyed even more success this season. He won nine World Cup medals - six individually and three in the relay - and finished seventh overall among men on the World Cup. His medal haul included two silver medals in the 1,500 metres and one in the 1,000 metres. Now, comes another challenge. To shine when it matters most. "This is definitely the biggest competition other than the Olympics. In a non-Olympic year, this is the one everyone wants to win," Jayner said of the world championships, which run until Sunday in Sheffield. "To perform well at the worlds would mean a lot to me. I think my results tell me that I'm ready for this, so I want to prove that I can do this at the very top level." Jayner, who took up the sport beginning as a five-year-old at the Riverview Speed Skating Club, won medals in the relay with the U.S. in his previous two trips to the world championships. He claimed silver last year in Sofia, Bulgaria and bronze in 2007 in Milan, Italy. He finished 11th overall individually at last year's event. Jayner believes he's capable of hitting the podium in Sheffield. "I want to win. That's why we all skate. I was 11th last year and obviously, I want to improve on that," said Jayner, who finished third in the World Cup 1,000 metre rankings, 10th in the 1,500 metres and 23rd in the 500 metres this season. "Based on what I've done this year, I think I should be able to do that. There are no guarantees, but it takes a well-rounded athlete to win at the world championships. I feel like I have a shot in all the distances, so this is a pretty exciting moment for me." Indeed it is. Jayner, who trains out of Salt Lake City, Utah, had won just one individual World Cup medal entering this season. "It's been a breakout year after a breakout year. I feel like this is the greatest year I've ever had and I've outdone what I expected I would do. My goal this season was to not have an Olympic letdown, not have a downer year like a lot of athletes have in the year after an Olympics," he said. "I really wanted to push my limits this season and not rest for three years from now (the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia). I'm thinking, 'Let's seize the day.' "I've tried to push myself as hard as I can and as often as I can and at the same time have as much fun as possible." Jayner is one of the American team's veteran skaters following the departure of standouts Apolo Anton Ohno and J.R. Celski this season. "Our training group is very different now without some of the guys who were at the top leading into the Olympics. We've had an influx of youth and I sort of find myself as one of the older guys all of a sudden," Jayner said. "I'm not sure how much that's changed my perspective, but if anything, the younger guys keep me young and I'm trying to keep as hungry as they are." One of the events Jayner is most looking forward to this week is the 5,000 metre relay. The Americans are ranked fourth in the world in the relay entering Sheffield. "It's definitely one of the events you cherish the most. You either win as a team or you lose as a team," he said. "It's fun to be out there together all at the same time after you've trained all season for that moment. It's awesome to share that kind of experience with three or four other people."[/img] Read More: timestranscript.canadaeast.com/sports/article/1387552Tags: Travis Jayner / Short Track Speedskating +++
