Several friends contacted me & said that Emily was on the front page of USA Today - today! There's a Sochi video (fluff) before the article text - you'll have to scroll down. Thanks to Lily for sending me the link to Emily's GoFundMe account - she's getting lots'a love! GoFundMe Link: Emily Scott's Dream 2014 Sochi, Russia www.gofundme.com/16d0o4?utm_campaign=Emails&utm_source=sendgrid.com&utm_medium=email--------------------- The Article: For some Olympic hopefuls, funding is a hurdleKelly Whiteside, USA TODAY Sports 11:14 a.m. EDT July 2, 2013 SALT LAKE CITY -- Emily Scott filed for food stamps two weeks ago. This month, the Olympic short-track speedskating hopeful's monthly stipend was cut from $1,950 to $600.
Though she shares an apartment with a roommate and has a part-time job at a surgical supply factory, Scott's expenses come in way above her stipend. Scott, 24, has no idea how she is going to make ends meet. She trains six days a week, about eight hours a day. The Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, are seven months away.
Scott grew tearful as she discussed her food stamps application. "The last thing you want to be worried about in a year like this is being able to pay your rent and eat, and you want to eat healthy," she said at lunch as she twirled a spoon in a bowl of soup. "That was pretty hard. ... But I'm not the only one suffering."Read It All: www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2013/07/01/olympic-hopefuls-struggle-financially/2481569/

"...getting lots of love..." Yes, she is...15K worth at last count. We need more articles like this. Our Olympic athletes and hopefuls are never going to get the funding they need if the American public is never made aware of what REALLY goes on for them financially. Stop buying the hype and funding the beast. You want to support our Olympic athletes? Put a check into their hands...not the USOC or their NGB's. When U.S. speedskater Emily Scott posted on the crowdfunding site, gofundme.com, she never thought this would happen. After reading about how her monthly stipend from US Speedskating was cut from $1950 to $600 and her wrenching decision to apply for food stamps, many responded with financial support.
Before USA TODAY Sports published her story, Scott had raised $190 in two months. By Tuesday afternoon, she had raised $15,710 and counting.
At 2:30 ET, Scott posted: "I know that Thank You is not enough but sincerely, Thank You to everyone that has donated and everyone for just believing in me. I promise that I will give 110% every single day. Every single one of you are truly a blessing to me, Thank You."Read the rest here: www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2013/07/02/olympic-hopeful-emily-scott-raises-money/2483979/

Emily is currently skating in Olympic Trials, but here are her results from World Cups 3 & 4 (the two Olympic qualifying competitions). We did not qualify a Ladies Relay team.

#5 was the biggest surprise for me! Six fun facts about short track skater Emily ScottBy Willie Cornblatt, NBCOlympics.com / Dec 5, 2013 5. When Scott was younger, she made the junior Olympics gymnastics team, but had to give up the sport because “once you get to that level it gets a little bit expensive, so we couldn’t afford it.”Read it all: www.nbcolympics.com/news/six-fun-facts-about-short-track-skater-emily-scott

A great article about Emily and her father and their journey to the Olympics. Emily Scott overcomes humble beginnings to realize Olympic dream. The brightness of her dream — Emily Scott has a hard time explaining that part. There was something about the Olympics. The colors. The flags. The crowds. The Olympics mean different things to different people, of course, but she saw the athletes and she felt this overwhelming longing. Those Olympians made it. That might be the closest phrase to what she felt. They made it. Those athletes, the skaters and the skiers, the runners and the jumpers, the swimmers and the gymnasts, they were at the center of the world. They made it. This was the biggest thing she could imagine.
It all seemed silly in a way, so distant from her own life, so far away from her place in southwest Missouri, so disconnected from the day-to-day world she knew. And yet, somehow, she believed — she could not stop believing — that the Olympics were her destiny. She would make it. She had to make it. She could not explain it.
Somehow, her father understood.Full article: www.nbcsports.com/joe-posnanski/emily-scott-overcomes-humble-beginnings-realize-olympic-dream

What an amazing story - thus far, Emily has had the best showing among our Ladies' team! Good luck tonight to Emily and all of Team USA! Short track skater Emily Scott overcomes money shortages, family strife to make OlympicsBy Beth Harris, The Associated Press 14 February, 2014 11:13 AM SOCHI, Russia - Emily Scott's dad made it through strange airports in far-flung countries to watch her skate in short track at the Winter Olympics. Her mom, if she's lucky, may get to watch her on TV in prison.
The 24-year-old former inline skater from Springfield, Mo., got to Sochi thanks to emotional support from her father and financial help from a crowd-funding website while her mom is serving a 12-year sentence for drug trafficking...
...Emily talks to her father daily and her mother when she can. Her mother watched on the prison TV as Scott competed in the U.S. trials. Her parents divorced several years ago.
"I only get one mom and I want to support her because really everyone else has kind of given up on her," Scott said. "I feel like I'm kind of the mom, but I'm OK with that. I want her to meet my children some day and be around for that."Read it all: ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/short-track-skater-emily-scott-overcomes-money-shortages-161318841--oly.html
