Things went very smoothly at the Oval today despite the 'elephant in the room' - it was a great day of racing! Chris Creveling and Jessica Smith were the 'king and queen' of the day, each of them winning both the 9-Lap and 4-Lap time trials - and they lead in the Overall standings as well. Some notable things that have happened yesterday and today: Nine skaters did the skate-in time trial yesterday (Wednesday). Seven qualified to skate today, and two did not. The two who did not qualify are younger skaters - the seven who did qualify include 6 skaters we follow here at BB, and one younger skater who we will be starting a thread for here soon: Allison Baver Brittany Salmon Jeff Simon Eddy Alvarez Ian Quinn Robert Lawrence Aaron Tran (new) In the 9-Lap TT, Lana Gehring had a transponder issue and was late to the start - she ended up double-false-starting, then asked for and was granted a re-skate. In her re-skate, she actually had the 2nd-fastest time - but the rules say that if you re-skate after a penalty, you can get no higher than 14th place. Lana's 14th-place placement still advances her to tomorrow's Finals racing program and she avoids the repechages. Jordan Malone's week-long problems with kidney stones led to surgery yesterday, so he was unable to compete today. He still went to the line and double-false-started in order to preserve his eligibility for future competitions (correct me if I'm wrong about why he did the DFS). He was obviously disappointed, but he's feeling better and will be back on the track soon. Kendal Pumphrey has withdrawn from the competition and decided to pursue long track. Best of luck to you, Kendal - you will be missed! Take a look at the results link that gasp posted above - there are some interesting new faces finishing higher than ever in the mix - as well as some vets who haven't been around for awhile! Tomorrow will be the repechages for the 1500M(1) and the 500M(1), starting at 10:30 - and the Finals rounds, starting at 1:00pm (Mountain Time). The repechage rounds for the 1500M(1) will include all skaters who finished 15th or lower in today's 9-Lap TT, and will reduce the field to two skaters who will fill the 15th and 16th positions for the 1500M(1) Finals rounds. The repechage rounds for the 500M(1) will include all skaters who finished 15th or lower in today's 4-Lap TT, and will reduce the field to two skaters who will fill the 15th and 16th positions for the 500M(1) Finals rounds. I don't know whether Tony's streaming the repechages - but when he IS streaming, here's the likely link: www.justin.tv/shorttrackhd#/w/3877494112/3

Thanks for holding down the fort, gasp! I'm still a little distracted, but I'm gonna try to watch Tony's stream today as much as I can. Congrats to Jessica Smith, Lana Gehring, Jeff Simon and Robert Lawrence on their wins yesterday! BTW, the trip home was beautiful - I left SLC at sunrise, got to L.A. at sunset. All went well with Levi's birth - he has all his fingers, toes, and other 'parts', is healthy & cute as a button! I didn't make it home before he was born, which was shortly after I left the hotel (after only 45 minutes at the hospital)! But I did make it to the hospital with 1/2 hour to spare before visiting hours were over. Good luck to all the skaters today!

I hope y'all hung with Tony's stream long enough to see his interviews with Jordan Malone and Katherine Reutter! Jordan 'splained the kidney stone issue that kept him out of the competition this weekend, and he also touched on the controversy - he didn't go much beyond what we've seen in the news, but his passion for what they are doing is unmistakeable. Katherine is still rehabbing, but says that if all goes well she will be working towards US Championships in December! Updated results thru today's races can be found at: www.usspeedskating.org/sites/default/files/US%20Single%20Distance%20Results_0_0.pdf
