Mary sneaking up behind Cherise Wilkins. Despite all the photos with Mary in second (American Cup 4), she finished the American Cup season 1st overall for the ladies and was the highest placing US woman at the Junior World Championships. Great Season, Mary! (All photos courtesy of Jerry Search)

'Anybody know how Mary did in the Long Track Jr. Championships? Yeah, I know I can look myself, but so many of our 'kids' compete in LT as well, and there are only so many hours in a day... Re: Short Track... Mary is definitely on the 'cusp' of greatness here - she's so young, and so talented, and she's only 18!!!. I can't wait to see where she goes in this sport! Wilmette native Grace comes home to raceby George M. Wilcox / March 2, 2010 www.pioneerlocal.com/glencoe/sports/highschools/2079196,glencoe-speedskate-030410-s2.article With friends and club teammates competing across the country at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Mary Grace returned home Saturday to race one more time in the Northbrook Open. The 18-year-old hopes to join former Northbrook Speedskating Club teammates Brian Hansen and Lana Gehring in the next Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, in 2014. Hansen won a silver medal in long track team pursuit and Gehring brought home a bronze medal in the 3000-meter relay. Grace, a Junior World Champion at Taiwan in January, finished seventh at the Olympic Trials last year in Marquette, Mich. On the same day Hansen won his medal, Grace was back in Northbrook competing in the short-track Northbrook Open in the Open A Ladies division. Grace, a Wilmette native currently living in Salt Lake City, represented the Mid-America Speedskating Club, which is run by Sam Poulos. His daughter Leah Poulos-Mueller is a former world champion and Olympic medalist from the Northbrook Speedskating Club. "(The Olympic Trials) were very much a motivator," Grace said. "I need to work harder." Grace attended Loyola as a freshman before moving out of the area to train. In the fall, she plans on entering Marquette University to train at the Pettit Center and study speech pathology. After attempting to qualify for the Vancouver Games in short track, Grace is willing to give long track a try before the international speedskating ends. She will compete in the World Long-Track Championships in Moscow, March 12-14. "After the Olympic tryouts, I was a little disappointed, frustrated with short track," Grace said. "I switched to long track and I'm still skating." With an opening in her schedule, Grace didn't have to think twice about returning to the annual Northbrook Open. She started skating in the area at age 3. "I love seeing the little ones," said Grace, who took time to meet with young competitors about to race at the Northbrook Sports Center. "I like going back to my roots like when I was growing up. I used to compete for Northbrook and the Evanston Speedskating clubs. I would go back and forth." Grace wasn't the only Olympic-caliber speedskater at the Northbrook Open. Landon Hatfield of Charlottesville, Va., competed in the Open A Men's division after finishing sixth at the long track U.S. Junior Championships in Milwaukee. Hatfield, 19, has relatives in the Chicago area and competed Saturday in Northbrook before leaving for the short track American Cup Finals this weekend in Wausau, Wis. "I'm trying to make the World Team and eventually the Sochi Olympics," said Hatfield, who placed 28th in the short-track Olympic trials.
