Joey at American Cup 4. Joey finished 3rd overall for the season. Good Job, Joey. Joey in third behind Anthony Lobello and Barry Winslow. Anthony Lobello, Levi Kirkpatrick, Barry Winslow and Joey. All photos by Jerry Search. Nice of you Jerry to get the skaters coming and going! (the 'going isn't as obvious as to who they are - but nice view just the same - LOL) Thanks! ;D

photo brought over from TRF. Skater art (?) by goofing around with photo software. Most of the time, I usually end up with an unidentifiable mess, but once in awhile, I get some 'happy accidents'. The photo is from US Championships. (original photo by Jerry Search before I abused it...) Everyone noted that the lighting in the arena made the ice look pink in their photos. I just kinda went with it to see what it would do. These are the results. Ryan Bedford, JR Celski, Joey Lindsey and Jordan Malone, skating on a sea of frozen flourescent pink snowcones.

We have an urgent request from Southern California Speedskating Association (you know, the club a lot of our National skaters come out of! LOL) on behalf of Joey Lindsey. You know Joey mostly as a short tracker, but look what he's accomplished as a long tracker in a very short time! Those of you who have had the pleasure of meeting Joey know he's a very charming young man, and very deserving of any support you can give him. J.R. Celski (L) and Joey Lindsey skate around turn two as Eduardo Alvarez #49 falls down during the Men's 1500 Meter Semi-final at the U.S. Short Track Speedskating Championships at the Berry Events Center on September 9, 2009 in Marquette, Michigan. (September 8, 2009 - Photo by Doug Benc/Getty Images North America) I'll never forget Joey lapping the pack at American Cup 1 last year. Held onto it too for most of the race...until he just plain ran out of gas. Near the end of the race, the rest of the pack was gaining on him. He said Shani wizzed by him, and whispered something to the effect of a good natured 'ah, come'on man! You can do better than that!'. But sadly, poor Joey was completely spent. When he crossed the finish line, you could tell his thighs were just screaming at him in agony. No matter. He got a standing ovation and cheer from the crowd for the effort. Those are fond Short Track moments I'll always remember. It's not always the win, it's fighting the good fight. Joey has pulled off an amazing feat as witnessed in the letter below from Sue Perles of SCSSA. Any help you can give Joey would be greatly appreciated. Don't think your donation is too small, it all adds up when many kind hearted individuals participate. Joey Lindsey competes in race two of the 500 meter event during the U.S. Speedskating Championships at the Utah Olympic Oval on December 26, 2009 in Kearns, Utah. (December 25, 2009 - Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images North America) Your donation is also tax deductible if given through SCSSA. Unfortunately, the time constraints are REALLY tight. The competition starts January 16th. So he'll need some moola before then to get his airfare. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can also become a fan of Joey on his facebook page! Nice to see the Rocker Fund out in force at the Montreal World Cup! Joey Lindsey is one of our Southern California skaters. He tried but missed making the Short Track Olympic Team. Joey then decided to try long track and is competing in the LT Olympic Trials this week. Well it remains uncertain if Joey will qualify for the Olympic Team, Joey has qualified for the World Sprint Team competing in Sapporo, Japan. This is a huge accomplishment for someone who has only been on long track skates for a few weeks! US Speedskating has told athletes that they have to pay their own way to Japan for World Sprints. If they finish in the top 20 a skater will receive some USS funding. So, I am asking if the Rocker Fund can assist Joey in funding his trip to the World Sprint Championships. It would mean a lot to Joey and would be an excellent project for the Rocker Fund. Thank your for considering this project and I look forward to seeing you all at an ice rink soon. All the best, - SuePlease send your checks/donations written to SCSSA. Please indicate on the check and on the envelope that this is for Joey Lindsey.
Joey Lindsey c/o Southern California Speedskating Association 5701 E. Vernon Street Long Beach, CA 90815
Thank You on behalf of Joey

Man, that LT pic hardly even looks like Joey - they sure do look different in the LT garb, don't they?
I'll definitely be donating - go Joey!

An update on Joey's results from Japan: He finished 14th overall! If you remember from earlier info, he had to finish in the top 20 to be eligible for some USS funding - mission accomplished! Joey's story over the last 2 months has been remarkable. After failing to make the Olympic team in short track speedskating, Sue Perles from the SoCal club convinced him to try long track, and gave him a pair of blades. After only a few weeks of LT skating, a one-day coaching session from legend Derek Parra, and valuable advice from other skaters, Joey qualified to attend the World Sprint competition in Japan. His 14th-place finish (in his first international competition, BTW) not only got him some funding from USS, but it qualified the USA for a slot at the World Sprints next year! Joey's family extends thanks to everyone who contributed financially to his Japan trip; to Sue Perles for the blades and encouragement; and to Wilma Boomstra for the conditioning and training that laid the groundwork for his success...

Joey Lindsey WON the 500M Sprint at Long Track Nationals – Way to go, ‘Yoey’!!! When we were at US Championships, Joey was a block-chaser – at one point he told us he had a long track race the next morning and invited us to come out to watch. We did, but Joey wasn’t there - glad to see you didn’t oversleep for this one, Joey! Here’s an article that has some nice stuff in it about Joey: U.S. speedskating: Rebekah Bradford gets over her mental speed bumpBy Amy Donaldson / Deseret News / January 4, 2010 www.deseretnews.com/article/700097668/US-speedskating-Rebekah-Bradford-gets-over-her-mental-speed-bump.html?pg=1Photo Credit: Jeffrey D Allred… While Bradford won both of the women's sprints, Joey Lindsey won the men's 500. Olympian Shani Davis won the 1,000-meter event. Lindsey's time was :35.08, while Fredricks tied for second with Davis with times of :35.15. In the 1,000-meter race, Davis finished first (1:08.18), Jonathan Kuck was second with a personal-best 1:09.25, and Brian Hansen was third (1:09.42). Lindsey was thrilled with the win after a back injury kept him from training until October. "It was from overtraining," said the 22-year-old. "I've only been doing (long track) for about a year. During the summer, I was training with short track and long track, about eight hours a day, every day. It was just too much.." Since October, he's felt great and was ecstatic about winning Tuesday's 500-meter sprint. "I was surprised at how fast I bounced back," he said of resuming his training in October. "My 1,000 a week ago was substantially slower." He raced against Tucker Fredricks, who won the 500, on Monday morning and changed his race strategy on Tuesday. "Instead of focusing on how he was racing, I just focused on me and my race," he said. "I was able to put a lot more power into the race." Lindsey switched from short track to long track after he failed to make the U.S. Olympic team last year. "I love (long track) just as much as short track, and I'm more successful," he said. "I feel like my body is more built for long track." Tags: Joey Lindsey
